Solution Treatment of Flanges

Solution treatment (or solution annealing) of flanges is a key heat treatment process used to improve the properties of certain materials (especially stainless steel and nickel-based alloy flanges), particularly corrosion resistance and machinability.

Which flanges require solution treatment?

Not all flanges require solution treatment; primarily stainless steel flanges, such as:

Austenitic stainless steel flanges such as 304, 304L, 316, 316L, 321, and 347

Special corrosion-resistant alloy flanges (such as Inconel, Duplex, and Hastelloy)

Note : A solution annealing temperature above 1950 °F [1065 °C] may impair the resistance to intergranular corrosion after subsequent exposure to sensitizing conditions in F 321, F 321H, F 347, F 347H, F 348, and F 348H. When specified by the purchaser, a lower temperature stabilization or resolution annealing shall be used subsequent to the initial high temperature solution anneal (see Supplementary Requirement S10)

ASTM A350 LF2 flange material are a type of flange made from Carbon Steel that conforms to the specifications outlined in ASTM A350/A350M. The LF2 designation specifically refers to low-temperature carbon steel flanges. These flanges are designed for use in low-temperature service applications, making them suitable for environments where temperatures can drop significantly.

ASTM A350 LF2 Flanges is a method of connecting pipes, valves, pumps and other equipment to form a piping system. It also provides easy access for cleaning, inspection or modification. Flanges are usually welded or screwed. Flanged joints are made by bolting together two flanges with a gasket between them to provide a seal.ASTM A350 LF2 Flanges (Standard Specification for Carbon and Low-Alloy Steel Forgings, Requiring Notch Toughness Testing for Piping Components)

ASTM A350 LF2 Flange Material Equivalent

ASTM A350 LF2 flange material is a low temperature carbon steel forging material, commonly used to manufacture pipes, pipe fittings and valves that work in low temperature environments. It has good strength and toughness, especially at low temperatures, it can maintain good mechanical properties to prevent brittle fracture and other failure forms.

Equivalent grades of ASTM A350 LF2 are as follows:

Group Of Material

Common Name Of Material

Type Of Material

UNS

Forging Spec.

Casting Spec. Equivalent

DIN

DIN W. No

Application

Low Temperature Carbon Steel (LTCS)

LTCS

C-Mn-Fe

K03011

A350-LF2

A352-LCB A352-LCC

TSTE 355 DIN 18103

1.0566

General non-corrosive service from -46ºC (-50ºF) to 340ºC (650ºF), LF2 -46ºC ~ 425ºC

A350 LF2 Flange Material of Chemical Composition

CHEMICAL

LIMITS

C

Mn

P

S

Si

Cu

Ni

Cr

Mo

V

Nb

ASTM A350 LF2

MIN

0.60

0.15

MAX

0.30

1.35

0.035

0.040

0.35

0.40

0.40

0.30

0.12

0.08

0.02

The carbon content in A350 LF2 is usually limited to a certain range, generally not exceeding 0.30%. Carbon is an important element that affects the strength and hardness of steel. The right amount of carbon can increase the strength of steel, but if the carbon content is too high, it will reduce the toughness of the steel, especially in low temperature environments, high carbon content may cause the steel to become brittle.

A350 LF2 Flange Material of Mechanical Property

MATERIAL

T.S (MPA)

Y.S (MPA)

EL %

R/A %

HARDNESS

ASTM A350 LF2

485-655

250 min

22 min

30 min

197 max

Yield strength is the stress at which steel begins to deform plastically. This is important to ensure that the steel does not deform excessively when subjected to load.

Learn more about A350M Standard

This specification covers several grades of carbon and low-alloy steel forged or ring-rolled flanges, forged fittings and valves intended primarily for low-temperature service and requiring notch toughness testing. They are made to specified dimensions, or to dimensional standards, such as the ASME and API Specifications referenced in Section 2. Although this specification covers some piping components machined from rolled bar and seamless tubular materials, it does not cover raw material produced in these product forms.

The molybdenum content is slightly higher than that of C22, which may make C276 have better corrosion resistance in some reducing corrosion environments. The tungsten content is 3 – 4.5%. Its tungsten content is also slightly higher than that of C22, which has a certain impact on high temperature performance and corrosion resistance.

Different Corrosion Resistance

In a strong oxidizing acid environment, due to its higher chromium content, C22 flange can form a more stable chromium oxide protective film and show better corrosion resistance.

In some complex environments containing a mixture of oxidizing and reducing media, Hastelloy C276 flange has better comprehensive corrosion resistance.
