ASME B16.9 Butt Weld Reducer is utilized to connect pipes in different sizes. Its ends are beveling to match a similar bevel on the pipe. The ends are then butted to the pipeline and joined with a full penetration weld.

It uses seamless or welded pipe as the starting material and are forged (through multiple process) to get the shape of reducer. carbon steel is more common in butt weld reducer due to cost advantage. Sch 10 pipe reducer are also more common in stainless steel fittings.

They are advisable to used in high pressure level and poor service condition, because it has a better strength and stress state, and it can withstand higher diameter and pressure rating.

It has good weld ability, and can obtain high quality welding joint without special process measure. Also has good plasticity, little quenching tendency, and difficult to produce cold crack in the near seam.

Generally, A234 WPB pipe reducer does not need to preheat before welding, but for the big thickness or in low temperature environment, when welding they need to preheat to 150 ℃ or so.

Stainless Steel Butt Weld Reducer

Stainless steel pipe reducer is widely used in many fields, since the excellent properties of stainless steel.

A403 WP304 and WP316 pipe reducer is one of the most common material at present, and corrosion resistance is an important index to measure SS 316 pipe reducer. As a result, the stainless steel passivization has been carried out, and the structure of the passivization film with good protective effect has been studied deeply.

CS reducer’s construction is stronger than SS reducer. It is wear-resisting, and can withstand high pressure but is also susceptible to corrosion.

Alloy Steel Butt Weld Reducer

In order to improve the properties of steel, alloy elements are added to carbon steel such as silicon, manganese, chromium, nickel, tungsten, vanadium, titanium, etc. This kind of steel is alloy steel.

With the same amount of carbon, alloy steel butt weld reducer has significantly higher strength than carbon steel reducer. It has good toughness, plasticity as well as corrosion resistance. The properties of the alloy steel reducer will vary according to the alloy elements.
