What is EN1092-1 Slip-On Flanges?

EN1092-1 Slip-On Flanges (Type 01) are standardized steel pipe flanges, designed and manufactured in strict accordance with EN1092-1 European standard for wrought steel flanges and their joints. As a widely applied connection component in industrial piping systems, they are recognized for their cost-effectiveness, simplified installation process, and reliable sealing performance. Thus they are preferred choice for medium and low-pressure industrial applications across global markets.

Design Features of Type 01 Slip-On Flanges

The design specification of EN1092-1 Slip-On Flanges Type 01 is defined by the European Committee for Standardization (CEN), ensuring uniform dimensional tolerances, material requirements, and performance benchmarks.

Unlike weld neck flanges, Type 01 slip-on flanges feature a straightforward structure: the flange is slipped over the outer surface of the connecting pipe, then secured with fillet welds on both the inner and outer circumferences of the flange hub. This design reduces installation complexity, shortens construction time, and lowers welding requirements. Besides, it maintains sufficient structural integrity for standard industrial operating conditions.

Sealing Surface Options for EN1092-1 Flanges

The sealing surface of EN1092-1 Slip-On Flanges Type 01 follows EN1092-1 standard specifications, typically adopting a type A-flat face (FF) or type-B raised face (RF) design.

Type A: The flat face (FF) is suitable for low-pressure (PN≤10) and non-toxic media pipelines, ensuring simple sealing with standard gaskets.

Type B: The raised face (RF) is designed for medium-pressure (PN10-PN16) systems, providing enhanced sealing performance by increasing the contact pressure between the flange and gasket.

Both designs are compatible with EN-standard gaskets (non-asbestos, PTFE, graphite), effectively preventing media leakage and ensuring compliance with industrial safety requirements.

EN Approved Material for Flanges Type 01

Materials for EN1092-1 Slip-On Flanges comply with European material standards and EN1092-1 specification requirements, with carbon steel as the primary option for general industrial use. The core European material grades include EN 10025 S235JR, S275JR (carbon structural steel), EN 10213 C22.8 (carbon steel for pressure equipment), and EN 10222-2 P235GH, P265GH (pressure vessel carbon steel). For corrosive media environments (such as petrochemical and marine pipelines), stainless steel grades EN 1.4301 (304 equivalent), EN 1.4401 (316 equivalent) are available. Alloy steel grades (e.g., EN 1.7182) are optional for high-temperature, medium-pressure industrial systems, ensuring full compatibility with EN1092-1 standard requirements.

Quality Control for EN1092-1 Flange

Quality control of EN1092-1 Flanges is implemented throughout the manufacturing process, in strict accordance with EN1092-1 and relevant European industrial standards. All flanges undergo strict dimensional verification to ensure consistency with EN1092-1 standard tolerances; material composition analysis is conducted to confirm compliance with specified European steel grades; and pressure testing (hydrostatic testing or pneumatic testing) is performed to verify sealing performance and pressure-bearing capacity.

Additionally, surface treatment (such as hot-dip galvanizing, anti-rust painting, or pickling and passivation) is available to enhance corrosion resistance and extend the service life of the flanges.

Where to Use Type 01 Slip-On Flange?

EN1092-1 Type 01 Slip-On Flanges are widely applied in industrial sectors that adopt European standards, including oil and gas transmission, petrochemical processing, power generation (thermal power, hydropower), water treatment, chemical engineering, and general manufacturing. Their adaptability to medium and low-pressure systems, combined with cost-effectiveness and easy installation, makes them an indispensable component in modern European-standard industrial piping networks.

Summary

EN1092-1 Slip-On Flanges Type 01 adhere to EN1092-1 European standards, featuring standardized design, compliant European material grades, reliable performance, and wide application scope.

Introduction: Why Fastener Choice Is Critical

In high-pressure environments like flange connections and pressure vessel fabrication, fastener selection directly impacts system integrity, safety, and operational reliability. Stud bolts and bolts serve fundamentally different engineering purposes in these applications. An incorrect choice can lead to gasket failure, leakage, joint separation, or catastrophic pressure release. This guide provides a targeted comparison and installation protocol specifically for pressurized flange and vessel applications.

The Core Distinction Stud Bolts vs Bolts: Application-Driven Design

Bolts (Hex Bolts/Cap Screws)

Typical Flange/Vessel Applications: Low-pressure or non-critical connections, temporary blinds, manway covers on atmospheric tanks, ancillary attachments.

Design: Integrated hexagonal head for tool engagement.

Installation: Torque applied directly to the bolt head.

Key Limitation in Critical Service: Prone to loosening under vibration/thermal cycling; creates uneven stress concentration; complicates alignment in multi-hole flange patterns.

Stud Bolts

Industry Standard for Critical Service: Permanent pressurized connections (ASME-coded flanges), pump/valve stations, heat exchangers, reactors.

Design: Headless threaded rod, typically with continuous or end threading.

Installation: Utilizes two nuts; torque is applied only to the nuts.

Primary Advantage: Superior fatigue resistance from even load distribution; allows for precise flange alignment; permits maintenance disassembly without disturbing the seated stud.

Selection Criteria for Pressurized Systems

Specify Stud Bolts When (Per ASME B16.5):

All Process Piping Flanges (Class 150 through Class 2500).

Pressure Vessel Main Flanges, especially for diameters >12″ or high-pressure service.

Systems with Thermal Cycling or High Vibration (e.g., heat exchangers, compressor lines).

Applications Using Compressible Gaskets that may require re-torquing.

Where Corrosion Resistance is Critical (simpler to specify high-integrity materials like A193 B8/B8M).

Standard Bolts May Be Acceptable For:

Low-Pressure, Non-Critical Vessels (certain ASME Section VIII, Div. 1 applications).

Non-Pressurized Attachments (insulation jacketing, platforms).

Temporary Maintenance Closures.

Small, Low-Pressure Access Ports (though studs are often still specified for consistency).

Governing Standards & Material Specifications

Dimensional Standards

ASME B16.5: Defines stud bolt length based on Flange Pressure Class x Nominal Diameter.

ASME B18.31 / DIN 2510 / ISO 3506: Govern stud dimensions, thread lengths, and tolerances.

Critical Material Standards (ASTM)

Component

Primary ASTM Standard

Common Grades

Application Note

Stud Bolts

A193 – Alloy & Stainless Bolting for High Temp/Pressure

B7 (Chrome-Moly Alloy), B8 (304 SS), B8M (316 SS)

Standard for critical service. Grade must match service conditions.

Nuts

A194 – Nuts for High-Pressure/High-Temp Service

2H (for B7), 8 (for B8), 8M (for B8M)

Must be grade-matched to the stud. Hardened for durability.

Washers

F436 – Hardened Steel Washers

Type A (Plain), Type B (Chamfered)

Used under nuts to distribute load and protect flange face.

Standard Bolts (if used)

A307 (Grade B) or A320 (L7/B8 for low-temp)

N/A

For specific, non-critical applications only.

Critical Note: For sour service (H₂S present), NACE MR0175/ISO 15156 compliance is mandatory. This often requires specific heat treatment (e.g., A193 B7M).

Installation for Joint Integrity

Pre-Installation Protocol

Material Verification: Confirm all components (studs, nuts, washers) match the specification sheets and P&ID requirements.

Thread Inspection & Lubrication: Clean threads thoroughly. Apply a uniform layer of approved anti-seize lubricant (e.g., nickel or molybdenum-based) to all threads. This ensures accurate clamp load and prevents galling, especially with stainless steel.

Step-by-Step Stud Bolt Installation for Flanges

Phase 1: Stud Insertion

Hand-start each stud into its tapped hole. Never use pipe wrenches on threads. Use a stud driver or double-nut method for installation.

Tighten until snug. The stud should not bottom out in the hole.

Phase 2: Gasket & Flange Alignment

Place the correct gasket (type and material as specified).

Position the mating flange over the studs.

Phase 3: Nut Installation & Torquing Sequence

Place washers (if specified) and nuts. For raised face flanges, nuts are typically installed on the flange side.

Torquing must follow a cross-pattern, multi-pass sequence:

Pass 1 (Snug): Hand-tighten all nuts in a star pattern.

Pass 2 (30%): Torque to 30% of final value in a crisscross sequence.

Pass 3 (60%): Increase to 60% in the same pattern.

Final Pass (100%): Torque to 100% of specified value.

Verification Pass: Go around the entire bolt circle in the tightening direction to ensure uniformity.

Phase 4: Post-Installation

Mark nuts and studs with a paint pen for visual inspection of rotation during service.

For soft gaskets (e.g., non-asbestos), plan a hot re-torque after the first operational heat cycle.

Warning for Standard Bolts in Flange Applications

If engineering design permits standard bolts:

The bolt head should face the direction of easiest future access.

Use hardened washers under both head and nut.

A cross-pattern torque sequence is non-negotiable to prevent flange distortion.

Maintenance & Troubleshooting

Flange Leakage: Do not simply over-torque. Investigate for misalignment, gasket failure, improper bolt stress, or corrosion.

Nut Loosening: Indicates vibration, insufficient preload, or gasket relaxation. Consider all-metal lock nuts (A194 Grade 2H/8) for critical service.

Stud Fracture: Typically caused by over-torquing, thread galling, hydrogen embrittlement, or fatigue. Always replace with the correct ASTM-grade material and investigate the root cause.

Conclusion

For flanged connections in pressure piping and vessels, stud bolts are the unequivocal engineering standard. Their design is inherently superior for managing the challenges of sealing pressure, thermal expansion, cyclic loading, and maintenance. Standard bolts are reserved for general construction and non-pressure boundary attachments.

Final Authority: Always defer to the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code, P&IDs, and engineered specifications for final requirements. Proper selection, adherence to standards, and meticulous installation are the foundational pillars of leak-free, safe, and reliable pressurized system operation

Solution Treatment of Flanges

Solution treatment (or solution annealing) of flanges is a key heat treatment process used to improve the properties of certain materials (especially stainless steel and nickel-based alloy flanges), particularly corrosion resistance and machinability.

Which flanges require solution treatment?

Not all flanges require solution treatment; primarily stainless steel flanges, such as:

Austenitic stainless steel flanges such as 304, 304L, 316, 316L, 321, and 347

Special corrosion-resistant alloy flanges (such as Inconel, Duplex, and Hastelloy)

Note : A solution annealing temperature above 1950 °F [1065 °C] may impair the resistance to intergranular corrosion after subsequent exposure to sensitizing conditions in F 321, F 321H, F 347, F 347H, F 348, and F 348H. When specified by the purchaser, a lower temperature stabilization or resolution annealing shall be used subsequent to the initial high temperature solution anneal (see Supplementary Requirement S10)

A flanged tee is a pipe fitting with three connection ports, where two ports are parallel to each other and the third port is positioned perpendicular or at an angle to them. Its structural design facilitates branching connections in piping systems, enabling fluid to flow smoothly between pipes in different directions. Flanged tees feature flanges welded to all three pipe ends. The tee manufacturing standard is ASME B16.9, while the flange standard is ASME B16.5.

Typically, flanged tees connect to pipelines via flange plates. This connection method uses bolts to tightly secure the flange plates together, with sealing gaskets placed between them to ensure joint integrity and effectively prevent fluid leakage. During operation, fluid enters through one port and, according to system requirements, is distributed through internal passages to the other two ports, enabling functions such as diversion, convergence, or directional change.

Types of Flanged Tees

Equal Flanged Tees: Equal flanged tees are the most common type, featuring three ports of identical diameter. They are suitable for connecting branch pipes of the same diameter. Utilizing flange connections, they offer not only convenient installation and disassembly but also reliable sealing performance. They are widely used in pipeline systems across industries such as petroleum, chemical processing, and water treatment.

Reducing Flanged Tees: Reducing flanged tees feature one or two ports with differing diameters, commonly used for connecting or transitioning between pipes of varying sizes. They enable rational connections between main and branch lines, ensuring smooth fluid distribution within piping systems. These are frequently found in petrochemical plants and process pipelines.

Lateral Flanged Tees: Lateral Flanged tees feature branch pipes angled less than 90° (e.g., 45°, 60°) relative to the main pipe. This design reduces fluid resistance in applications requiring low flow resistance, such as pipelines transporting high-viscosity media. The angled configuration minimizes impact and vortex formation at branch points, thereby reducing energy loss. It is suitable for piping systems with specific fluid dynamics requirements, such as high flow rates or conditions necessitating reduced impact.

Flange Types

All three ends of a flanged tee connect to piping via flanges. Common flange types, based on different design standards and application requirements, include:

Weld Neck Flange (WN)

Features a transition cone at the neck for butt welding to piping. Offers high strength and fatigue resistance, suitable for flanged tees in high-temperature, high-pressure, and critical piping systems.

Slip-On Flange (SO)

Pipes are inserted into the flange’s inner diameter for welding. Easy to install, suitable for flanged tees in medium-to-low pressure conditions.

Socket Weld Flange (SW)

Pipes are inserted into the flange’s socket for welding. Compact structure with high strength, commonly used for flanged tees in small-diameter high-pressure pipelines.

Threaded Flange (TH)

Connected via threads without welding. Suitable for flanged tees in hard-to-weld or low-pressure piping systems.

Blind Flange (BL)

Used to seal pipe ends. In certain applications, one end of a flanged tee may employ a blind flange for temporary or permanent sealing.

Lap Joint Flange (LJ)

Used with flanged pipe sections, suitable for pipelines requiring frequent disassembly or with high corrosion resistance requirements.

All Flanged Tee Advantages

1. Exceptional Sealing Performance

Thanks to meticulously designed flange connection structures and premium sealing gaskets, flanged tees maintain outstanding sealing capabilities across diverse operating conditions. Whether conveying high-pressure gases or liquids, or functioning in extreme temperatures, they effectively prevent leakage, ensuring safe and stable system operation.

2. Strong Adaptability

Flange tees offer multiple specifications and materials to suit piping systems with varying diameters, pressure ratings, and medium characteristics. Common materials include carbon steel, stainless steel, and alloy steel, each providing unique performance advantages to meet demands from general industrial applications to specialized corrosive environments.

3. Easy Installation and Maintenance

Compared to other complex pipe fittings, flanged tees feature relatively straightforward installation. Simply align them with the pipes and secure with bolts to complete the connection—no specialized skills or complex tools required. Additionally, they facilitate easy disassembly and replacement during maintenance and repairs, significantly reducing system maintenance costs and downtime.

4. Superior Mechanical Strength

Manufactured from high-strength materials, flanged tees exhibit outstanding mechanical strength and pressure resistance. They withstand both internal pipeline pressures and external environmental stresses, ensuring no deformation, rupture, or damage occurs during prolonged use. This provides a robust foundation for reliable pipeline system operation.

Stainless Steel Flanged Tee, SS 304 & 316

When selecting stainless steel flange tees, material choice is critical. 304 and 316 stainless steel have become two of the most commonly used materials in industrial applications due to their excellent corrosion resistance and mechanical strength, respectively.

304 stainless steel, valued for its favorable cost-performance ratio and broad applicability, is extensively used in food processing, chemical, and pharmaceutical industries. Conversely, 316 stainless steel excels in marine environments and medical equipment due to its superior corrosion resistance. The choice between these grades depends on the specific application scenario and requirements.

Butt weld tees involves more than simply connecting two or three pipes; it requires precise dimensional control, material compatibility, and comprehensive consideration of welding techniques. For both 304 and 316 stainless steel, temperature control during welding is critical—excessively high or low temperatures can compromise weld quality. Additionally, meticulous grinding and inspection are essential post-welding to ensure each weld point can withstand prolonged exposure to high pressure and temperature.

Customized Flanges—Meeting Specialized Requirements

In many industrial sectors, standard components often fail to fully address specific needs. This is where custom flanged tees become particularly crucial. By collaborating with specialized manufacturers, tees can be tailored to actual operating conditions—customized in size, shape, or even with specialized functions.

For instance, complex chemical plants may require unique flange sealing methods or additional reinforcement measures, demanding manufacturers with extensive production expertise.

How to Select the Right Flanged Tee Manufacturer?

Determine the Operating Environment: Select appropriate materials and pressure ratings based on the fluid medium (corrosiveness, abrasiveness), temperature, and pressure within the pipeline.

Verify Dimensions: Confirm the nominal diameters of the main and branch pipes to determine whether an equal-diameter or reducer tee is required.

Follow Standards: Choose products compliant with relevant national or industry standards, such as ANSI flanged tees, according to project requirements.

The post Flanged Tee appeared first on Supplier of Quality Forged Fittings-Flanges.

Raised Face Weld Neck Flange (RF Weld Neck Flange) is a common high-strength flange connection type. Its defining feature is a raised surface (Raised Face, abbreviated as RF) on the flange sealing face. This structure effectively concentrates pressure, enhancing the reliability of the seal between the gasket and the flange.

What are Weld Neck Flanges?

Weld neck flanges (WN flanges) are pipe connection components characterized by their weld neck design, which achieves high-strength, high-seal integrity connections within piping systems through butt weld to the pipe. weld neck flanges possess an extended neck section welded directly to the pipe. This neck design not only enhances connection strength but also provides a smoother fluid passage, reducing flow resistance. The flange sealing face is the critical interface for connecting the weld neck flange to its mating flange or equipment. Common sealing face types include flat face (FF), raised face (RF), female face (FM), and tongue and groove (TG). Different flange face types suit varying sealing requirements and operating conditions. Weld neck flanges feature uniformly distributed bolt holes for securing connections with mating flanges via bolts and nuts. The number, size, and arrangement of bolt holes comply with standard specifications to ensure connection reliability and interchangeability.

The manufacturing process for weld neck flanges includes raw material preparation, forging or casting, machining, heat treatment, and non-destructive testing. Forging and casting are the primary methods for shaping these flanges. Forged flanges feature dense microstructure, high strength, and excellent toughness; cast flanges are suitable for producing large-sized or complex-shaped components. Machining ensures dimensional accuracy and surface finish; heat treatment relieves residual stresses while enhancing mechanical properties and corrosion resistance; non-destructive testing detects internal defects and cracks.

What is a Raised Face Flange?

Raised Face Flange (RF Flange) is a type of pipe connection component featuring a sealing surface elevated above the bolt hole plane, forming a raised annular area. This design primarily concentrates the preload force on the gasket, applying greater pressure across a smaller contact area to achieve a more reliable seal and effectively prevent fluid leakage. Due to their outstanding sealing performance, RF flanges are among the most common and widely used flange sealing face types in industrial piping systems.

Features of RF Weld Neck Flanges

High Strength and Sealing Performance: The raised face structure ensures uniform gasket compression, making it suitable for high-pressure applications.

Welding Stability: The weld neck is butt-welded to the pipe, delivering high strength and fatigue resistance.

High Temperature and Corrosion Resistance: Available in carbon steel, stainless steel, alloy steel, and other materials to meet diverse operational requirements.

Wide Application: Commonly used in piping systems requiring frequent disassembly and high sealing standards.

ASTM A182 F316L Socket Weld Flange Introduction

ASTM A182 F316L Socket Weld Flange is a high-performance flange forged from austenitic stainless steel 316L material. Containing low carbon (≤0.03%), 316L stainless steel maintains excellent corrosion resistance while effectively preventing intergranular corrosion, making it highly suitable for welding applications.

Socket weld flanges are typically used for connecting small-diameter, high-pressure pipelines. Their structural feature involves an internal socket into which the pipe end is inserted for welding. The weld seam is positioned along the outer circumference of the flange, ensuring high connection strength and sealing integrity.

Dimension Inspection

Outer Diameter (OD)

Measure the overall outer diameter of the flange using a vernier caliper/OD caliper to ensure it conforms to standards, facilitating proper connection with piping systems and bolted joints.

Inner Diameter (ID)

Measure the inner bore diameter of the flange with a vernier caliper to guarantee compatibility with the connected pipe’s outer diameter, preventing improper installation.

Thickness (T)

Measure the flange thickness using a vernier caliper or micrometer to confirm the flange’s pressure-bearing capacity meets requirements and ensures safety.

Bolt Holes

Verify the number matches the standard to ensure proper bolt installation and guarantee stable flange connection.

Sealing Surface (Raised Face / RF)

Diameter: Measure the diameter of the sealing surface to ensure sealing effectiveness and prevent leakage.

In industrial piping systems, flanges serve as critical connection components, and their standard specifications directly impact the system’s safety and compatibility. This standard is further subdivided into Series A and Series B based on structural design, dimensions, and pressure-bearing capacity. The two series exhibit significant differences in design and application scenarios. This article will provide an in-depth analysis of their core distinctions to assist industry professionals in making precise selections. Understanding these differences is crucial for piping engineers and procurement personnel to make accurate selections.

ASME B16.47 Standard

This Standard covers pressure-temperature ratings, materials, dimensions, tolerances, marking, and testing for pipe flanges in sizes NPS 26 through NPS 60. Included are flanges with rating class designations 75, 150, 300,400, 600, and 900 with requirements given in both SI(Metric) and U.S. Customary units, with diameter of bolts and flange bolt holes expressed in inch units.

This Standard is limited to

(a) flanges made from cast or forged materials

(b) blind flanges made from cast, forged, or plate mate-rials (see Tables 1 and 2)Also included in this Standard are requirements and recommendations regarding flange bolting, flange gaskets, and flange joints.

Flange Series

This Standard provides two series of flange dimensions. Series A specifies flange dimensions for general use flanges. Series B specifies flange dimensions for compact flanges that, in most cases, have smaller bolt circle diameters than Series A flanges. These two series of flanges are, in general, not interchangeable. The user should recognize that some flanged valves, equipment bolted between flanges, and flanged equipment may be compatible with only one series of these flanges.

ASME B16.47 Series A and Series B

Series A (derived from API 605): Series A flanges originate from the American Petroleum Institute (API) API 605 standard, originally designed for high-pressure industrial pipelines in the petroleum and natural gas industries. Its dimensional parameters are highly compatible with the API standard system, making it widely used in high-pressure pipeline systems in the energy and chemical industries across North America, particularly suitable for applications with nominal diameters of DN200 (8 inches) or larger and higher pressure ratings.

Series B (MSS SP-44 Extension): Series B flanges are developed based on the MSS SP-44 standard of the Manufacturers Standards Society (MSS), with a design focus on versatility and cost-effectiveness. Its dimensional system offers stronger compatibility with traditional industrial pipelines, making it more widely used in international markets outside North America (such as Europe and Asia) and in medium-to-low-pressure pipeline systems. It also covers nominal diameters of DN200 and above, but offers a cost advantage in low-pressure applications.

Standard Origin

A Series: Derived from MSS SP-44.

B Series: Based on API 605.

Wall Thickness

A Series: Thicker flange bodies provide higher mechanical strength.

B Series: Thinner structure, suitable for medium loads.

Weight

A Series: Heavier due to increased thickness and number of bolts.

B Series: Lighter, easier to handle during installation.

Bolt Hole Diameter

A Series: Typically smaller bolt holes.

B Series: Larger bolt holes, typically requiring wider gaskets.

Bolt Quantity and Configuration

A Series: More bolt holes to enhance sealing and strength.

B Series: Fewer bolts to minimize cost and weight.

For example, in a DN300 (12-inch), Class 150 flange, Series A uses 8 bolts, while Series B requires only 6, making them incompatible for direct interchange.

Available Flange Types

A Series: Series A includes weld neck and blind flanges, which are commonly used in industries requiring high-pressure and critical applications.

B Series: Series B also includes weld neck and blind flanges, making it versatile for various applications.

Pressure Ratings

Series A: Series A flanges have pressure ratings of 150, 300, 400, 600, and 900. These ratings are suitable for high-pressure applications.

Series B: Series B flanges have lower pressure ratings, typically 75, 150, 300, 400, 600, and 900. These ratings are suitable for applications with lower pressure requirements.

Size Range

A Series: ASME B16.47 Series A covers flange sizes ranging from 26 inches to 60 inches. This makes it suitable for applications that require larger diameter flanges.

B Series: Series B covers flange sizes ranging from 26 inches to 60 inches, similar to Series A.

Sealing Surface

A Series: The sealing surface design of the A Series prioritizes high-pressure sealing performance,

B Series: The B Series excels in sealing efficiency at medium to low pressures.

Cost

A Series: ASME B16.47 A Series flanges are typically more expensive than B Series flanges. This higher cost is often justified due to their superior pressure handling capabilities and strict manufacturing and quality control requirements necessary for high-pressure standards. While they may be more expensive, they offer greater safety and reliability, which is critical in applications where failure consequences are severe.

B Series: ASME B16.47 B Series flanges are typically more cost-effective. They are ideal for applications where budget is a primary consideration and pressure requirements are less stringent. Choosing the B Series can save costs without compromising the integrity of the entire system.

Installation and Maintenance of ASME B16.47 Flanges

Installation Precautions

Confirm that the flange series, size, and pressure rating match the pipeline.

Tighten bolts evenly to avoid local stress concentration.

Use appropriate gaskets to ensure sealing performance.

Maintenance and Inspection

Regularly check the tightness of bolts.

Check the flange surface for corrosion or damage.

Replace aged gaskets to ensure long-term sealing.

How to Choose?

Based on the above differences, the selection of either series should be based on specific operating conditions:

Series A is the preferred choice for the following scenarios: high-pressure (Class 600 and above), high-temperature (above 300°C), and pipeline systems that transport corrosive or flammable and explosive media (such as natural gas and chemical raw materials), as well as engineering projects in North America that comply with API standards.

Preferred applications for Series B: Medium to low pressure (Class 300 and below), ambient temperature conditions, such as municipal water supply and drainage systems, general industrial cooling water pipelines, or systems in international engineering projects adhering to MSS standards, which can reduce procurement and installation costs.

Important notes: The two should not be used interchangeably. If both Series A and Series B flanges are present in a pipeline system, they must be connected via transition fittings; otherwise, seal failure or structural damage may occur.

Feature

Series A (MSS SP-44)

Series B (API 605)

Flange Outer Diameter

Larger

Smaller

Number of Bolts

More

Fewer

Weight

Heavier

Lighter

Cost

Higher

Lower

Pressure Rating

Higher

Lower

Typical Application

High-pressure, high-risk, critical pipelines

Low to medium pressure, cost-sensitive projects

Interchangeability

No

No

Conclusion

The differences between ASME B16.47 Series A and Series B flanges stem from their design backgrounds, manifesting in dimensions, pressure compatibility, and application scenarios. Series A excels in high-pressure and high-strength applications, making it suitable for demanding industries such as energy; Series B, on the other hand, stands out for its cost-effectiveness and versatility, widely used in medium- and low-pressure systems. When selecting flanges, it is essential to consider project standards, medium characteristics, and cost budgets comprehensively to ensure safe and efficient pipeline connections.
Specification of Weld Neck Flange

316L weld neck flanges are pipe connectors made from 316L stainless steel. They achieve a secure connection by butt-welding the pipe and are commonly used in applications involving high pressure, high temperature, and highly corrosive media. The high structural strength and excellent sealing properties of 316L weld neck flanges ensure the long-term safe operation of pipeline systems.

Advantages of SS316L

1. Excellent Corrosion Resistance

SS316L contains 2-3% molybdenum in its chemical composition, which gives it significantly better corrosion resistance than 304 stainless steel in chloride environments. It effectively resists pitting and crevice corrosion, making it ideal for marine environments, coastal areas, and applications involving chloride-containing media.

2. Excellent Welding Performance

“L” stands for “Low Carbon.” SS316L has a carbon content below 0.03%, significantly reducing the risk of carbide precipitation (also known as “sensitization”) during welding. This property prevents intergranular corrosion near the weld seam, ensuring the integrity and long-term stability of the welded joint in corrosive environments. Therefore, in pipeline systems requiring extensive welding, SS316L is a superior choice over 316.

3. High strength at high temperatures

SS316L maintains high tensile strength and creep strength even at high temperatures. This makes it suitable for high-temperature, high-pressure piping systems, such as heat exchangers and pressure vessels.

Stainless Steel 304 Types of Flanges

Weld Neck flange

The weld neck flange has a structure with a neck and a round tube transition, which can be butt weld to the pipe to form a firm pipe connection point.

Socket weld flange

Socket Weld Flange designed in accordance with ASME B16.5 standards, is a high-integrity flange used for creating a secure pipe connection in high-pressure systems.

Threaded flange

The threaded flange uses a screw thread to connect the flange onto pipe. A male thread is cut onto a pipe end while a female thread is cut into the bore of the flange. The male threaded pipe is then screwed into the female threaded flange.

Lap joint flange

The main structural feature of the lap joint flange is the loose connection. It consists of a flange body, a flange nipple and connecting bolts. The flange body and the flange nipple are loose fitting, and this structure allows the pipeline to expand and contract freely within a certain range.

Blind flange

Blind flanges help to terminate the ends of piping systems. The main purpose of using blind flanges is to close off the unused portion of pipe or nozzle.

Slip on flange

Slip on flange is mainly used for low-pressure fluids that have minimal risk of leakage. Stainless Steel Slip On Flange is commonly used in water lines, low-pressure compressed airlines, etc.

Stainless Steel Forged Flanges

Flanges are disc-shaped or ring-shaped parts used to connect pipes, valves, pumps, and other equipment, forming an integrated pipe system through bolt connections.

Stainless steel forged flanges are manufactured from stainless steel materials (such as 304, 316, 316L, etc.) through a forging process. Compared to cast flanges, the forging process eliminates internal defects in the metal, resulting in a denser structure, finer grain size, and better mechanical properties, enabling them to withstand higher pressures and temperatures.

Stainless Steel Flange Types

Weld Neck Flange

Slip On Flange

Blind Flange

Stainless Steel Forged Fittings

Fittings are components used to change the direction or diameter of pipes or to connect branches. Stainless steel forged fittings are also manufactured using forging techniques and offer similar advantages to forged flanges. They are critical components for ensuring the integrity and reliability of piping systems.

Types of Stainless Steel Forged Fittings

Socket Weld Fittings:

The fitting has an internal bore (socket) into which the pipe is inserted. The connection is then made by a fillet weld on the exterior of the fitting. This means the weld is outside the pipe, preventing it from affecting the pipe’s inner diameter.

Typically available in Class 3000 LBS, 6000 LBS, 9000 LBS, etc.

Socket Weld Cap

Socket Weld Elbow

Socket Weld Coupling

Socket Weld Union

Threaded Fittings:

The fitting has internal or external threads (usually NPT or BSPT standards) that connect to the pipe via a threaded connection.

Typically available in Class 2000 LBS, 3000 LBS, 6000 LBS, etc.

Threaded Elbow

Threaded Tee

Manufacturing Process: Forging vs. Casting

Forging

By heating stainless steel billets and then applying external pressure (such as hammering or stamping), plastic deformation occurs, ultimately forming the final shape.

Performance Characteristics:

High strength and toughness: Forged parts have a uniform and dense internal structure, enabling them to withstand higher pressures, impacts, and fatigue loads.

Durability: Forged components have a long service life and are particularly suitable for long-term use in harsh conditions such as high temperatures, high pressures, and high stresses.

High strength and toughness: The strength and impact resistance of forged components far exceed those of castings.

Better sealing performance: Forged components lack casting defects such as porosity and inclusions, ensuring no leaks at connection points.

Durability: The structure is more compact, resulting in a longer service life.

Casting

Stainless steel is heated to a molten state and then poured into a pre-prepared mold. After cooling and solidifying, it is demolded to form the final product.

Performance characteristics:

Lower mechanical properties: Due to potential internal defects, castings typically have lower strength, toughness, fatigue strength, and impact resistance compared to forgings.

Prone to defects: Internal defects such as porosity, shrinkage cavities, and inclusions may exist, affecting strength and sealing performance.

Poor sealing performance: Internal defects may serve as potential pathways for fluid leakage, posing greater risks under high-pressure conditions.

Conclusion:

Although the casting process is cost-effective, for critical applications in industries such as petroleum, chemicals, and nuclear power that demand the highest levels of safety and reliability, the forging process is undeniably the preferred choice. Its superior mechanical properties and sealing performance ensure the long-term stable operation of pipeline systems and minimize safety risks to the greatest extent possible.
