What Are Steel Pipes?

Steel pipes are hollow, elongated steel products primarily used for conveying fluids (such as petroleum, natural gas, water, gas, steam, etc.) and also for manufacturing mechanical components and engineering structures. Due to their lightweight yet high-strength properties, they have replaced traditional solid steel in many applications, becoming the material of choice. Additionally, steel pipes are commonly used in the production of various conventional weapons, such as gun barrels and artillery shells.

Manufacturing Process

Seamless Steel Pipe:

Produced by piercing a solid tube blank or steel ingot, followed by hot rolling, cold rolling, or cold drawing. Throughout this process, no weld seam forms inside the pipe, hence the name “seamless.”

Hot Rolling: A solid round billet is heated and pierced, then rolled and elongated through a series of rolling mills until the desired dimensions and wall thickness are achieved.

Cold Drawing / Cold Rolling: Based on the hot-rolled pipe, cold drawing or cold rolling is used to further reduce the diameter and wall thickness while improving dimensional accuracy and surface finish.

Welded Pipe:

Welded pipes are typically made from stainless steel plates or strips that are cold-formed into a cylindrical shape and then welded. The main welding methods include:

TIG Welding: Uses a tungsten electrode and an inert gas shield to weld the edges of the plate. It produces high-quality welds and is often used for pipes with strict quality requirements.

Laser Welding: Uses a high-energy-density laser beam for welding. It offers fast welding speed and a small heat-affected zone.

Plasma Welding: Falls between TIG and laser welding in terms of energy density. It is suitable for thicker materials.

Resistance Welding (ERW – Electric Resistance Welding): Heats the edges using electrical current until they fuse together. It is highly efficient but may produce welds of lower quality compared to TIG welding.

Characteristics of Seamless Steel Pipes

1. High Pressure Resistance: With no welded seams, seamless steel pipes feature a more uniform overall structure, granting them superior pressure resistance. They are suitable for use in harsh environments involving high pressure and high temperatures.

2. High Precision: Seamless steel pipes feature smooth inner and outer walls with high dimensional accuracy, making them suitable for applications demanding low fluid resistance and precise flow control.

3. Excellent Corrosion Resistance: Seamless steel pipes can utilize specialized materials and surface treatment technologies to enhance corrosion resistance and extend service life.

Characteristics of Welded Pipes

1. High Production Efficiency: The relatively simple production process of welded pipes enables continuous and automated manufacturing, significantly boosting production efficiency.

2. Lower Cost: Due to their straightforward production method and high material utilization, welded pipes offer relatively low costs, making them suitable for high-volume, low-cost applications.

3. Diverse Specifications: Welded pipes can be produced in various diameters, wall thicknesses, and lengths to meet diverse engineering requirements.

Structural Strength

Due to differences in manufacturing processes, the structural strength and risk resistance of the two materials are fundamentally distinct, serving as the core basis for selection in industrial applications.

Seamless Steel Pipe:

Lacking welded seams, seamless steel pipes feature a continuous and complete metallic structure. When subjected to pressure, impact, or high temperatures, stress is evenly distributed across the entire pipe wall. This prevents localized fractures caused by material variations at welds or welding defects such as incomplete fusion or porosity.

Welded pipes

The strength of welded pipes is directly influenced by weld quality: if welding processes meet standards, weld strength can approach that of the base material. However, if processes are substandard, defects like slag inclusions or cracks may form at the weld, creating “structural weaknesses.” Under high pressure, low temperatures, or frequent vibration, these welds are more prone to failure.

Application Areas

Seamless Steel Pipes:

High-Pressure and Critical Applications: The preferred choice for high-pressure, high-temperature, and high-strength environments such as oil and gas transmission, high-pressure boilers, chemical equipment, hydraulic systems, and nuclear power plants. In these applications, safety is paramount, and seamless tubes offer unmatched reliability.

Applications Demanding Consistency: Precision machinery structures, aerospace, and other scenarios with stringent requirements for pipe strength and reliability.

Welded Pipes:

Low-Pressure and General-Purpose Applications: Widely used for conveying low-pressure fluids like water, gas, and air. Their cost advantage and flexible sizing make them ideal for construction, structural engineering, furniture manufacturing, sports equipment, and similar fields.

Large-Diameter Projects: Long-distance oil and gas pipelines (especially spiral welded pipes), urban water supply and drainage networks, and other projects requiring large diameters and extended lengths.

Performance Characteristics

Seamless steel pipes, lacking welded seams, generally exhibit superior pressure-bearing capacity and are suitable for demanding environments such as high-pressure and high-temperature applications. Additionally, seamless steel pipes offer relatively higher precision and surface smoothness, making them ideal for scenarios with stringent performance requirements.

Welded pipes: Although their pressure-bearing capacity is slightly lower than seamless steel pipes, they are more cost-effective and offer greater convenience in processing and installation.

Surface Quality

Seamless steel pipes undergo high-temperature hot rolling, forming a layer of iron oxide scale on the surface that affects smoothness. For high-precision surfaces, additional post-processing such as cold drawing and polishing is required.

The raw material steel strip for welded pipes has a smooth surface. After forming, the weld seam undergoes treatment, resulting in inner and outer surfaces that are typically flatter and smoother than seamless pipes.

Corrosion Resistance

Seamless steel pipes possess superior corrosion resistance due to their monolithic structure, which eliminates potential hazards like intergranular corrosion in weld zones caused by heat-affected zones.

The weld zones of welded pipes undergo microstructural changes during high-temperature welding, making them more susceptible to corrosion initiation. In certain specialized media or environments, welds may corrode earlier than the base material.

How to Choose Between Seamless and Welded Pipes

1. Consider the operating environment: First, select the appropriate pipe material based on the project’s environmental conditions and usage requirements. For instance, in high-temperature, high-pressure, or corrosive environments, seamless steel pipes should be prioritized; whereas in general construction or low-pressure transportation applications, welded pipes offer an economical and practical choice.

2. Pay Attention to Pipe Specifications: Select appropriate pipe specifications based on project requirements. Both welded and seamless pipes offer multiple specifications, including diameter, wall thickness, and length.

3. Focus on Material Quality: When selecting pipes, pay attention to material indicators such as chemical composition, mechanical properties, and corrosion resistance to ensure compliance with relevant standards and specifications.

4. Consider Cost Factors: While meeting project requirements, cost considerations are also important. Generally, welded pipes have lower production costs and are relatively inexpensive, whereas seamless steel pipes involve more complex manufacturing processes and thus carry higher costs.

The post Seamless vs Welded Pipe appeared first on Supplier of Quality Forged Fittings-Flanges.

Inspection of Alloy Steel Pipes

Outer Diameter and Wall Thickness: Measurements are taken using a Vernier caliper or micrometer, typically at multiple points across different cross-sections of the tube to ensure accuracy. Some modern production lines utilize automated inspection equipment for continuous measurement.

Length: Measurements are taken using a steel tape measure to ensure the tube length meets order specifications.

End Faces: Inspect the beveled edges and cuts at both ends of the tube to ensure they are flat, smooth, and free of burrs.

Spectral Analysis: Spectral analysis is a non-destructive testing method used to determine the chemical composition of alloy steel tubes. By analyzing the content of specific elements in the steel, it can be confirmed whether it meets the grade standards.

Wooden box packaging: Wooden box packaging is primarily used to protect alloy steel tubes during long-distance transportation, especially during sea transport. For tubes with special surface treatments or precision components, the interior of the wooden box is filled with cushioning materials such as foam or bubble wrap to prevent the tubes from colliding with each other.

What is ASTM A335 Material?

ASTM A335 is a standard for seamless alloy steel pipes established by the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM), primarily used in pipeline systems operating under high-temperature and high-pressure conditions. This standard covers various grades of chromium-molybdenum alloy steel, such as P1, P5, P9, P11, P22, P91, etc., which exhibit excellent high-temperature strength, creep resistance, and corrosion resistance. They are widely applied in fields such as power plant boilers, petrochemical plants, refining facilities, and heat exchangers.

Advantages of Alloy Steel Pipes

High Strength and Toughness: Alloying elements significantly increase the yield strength and tensile strength of steel pipes, enabling them to withstand higher pressures and loads. At the same time, they maintain good toughness, making them less susceptible to brittle fracture.

Excellent High and Low-Temperature Resistance: Alloying elements enhance the pipe’s long-lasting strength and oxidation resistance at high temperatures, ensuring it retains excellent mechanical properties even at extremely low temperatures.

Excellent Corrosion Resistance: The addition of elements such as chromium and nickel significantly enhances the corrosion resistance of alloy steel pipes.

Wear Resistance: Some alloy steel pipes exhibit excellent wear resistance, effectively resisting erosion and wear caused by flowing media, extending their service life.

Product Lists

Item

Description of Goods

length

Unit

1

PIPE,316L,30,DN200

0.6

M

2

PIPE,316L,30,DN200

0.6

M

3

PIPE,316L,30,DN200

53.5

M

4

PIPE,316L,30,DN200

0.4

M

5

PIPE,316L,30,DN200

0.6

M

6

PIPE,316L,40S, DN150

24

M

Dimension Inspection of Stainless Steel Seamless Pipes

Outer Diameter (OD): Typically measured using a micrometer, vernier caliper, or ring gauge. During inspection, measurements should be taken at multiple cross-sections and locations along the pipe, with the maximum and minimum values recorded to verify compliance with allowable tolerances and assess ovality.

Wall Thickness: Wall thickness is a critical parameter affecting the pipe’s pressure-bearing capacity. During inspection, measurements are taken using an ultrasonic thickness gauge or micrometer. Typically, measurements are taken at multiple points, such as both ends and the middle of the pipe, to ensure uniform wall thickness and compliance with standards.

Length: Pipe length inspection is typically performed using a steel tape measure or automated length measurement device. For fixed-length pipes, length deviations must be strictly controlled within the standards’ permissible range.

Packaging

End Protection: Plastic caps or rubber sleeves are installed at both ends of the pipe to protect the pipe ends and surfaces from impact damage.

Bundling and Securing: Multiple pipes are bundled together using steel bands, steel wires, or plastic straps. During bundling, protective materials must be placed between the pipes and the bundling straps to prevent the straps from damaging the pipe surfaces.

Wooden Box Construction: Customize sturdy wooden boxes according to the dimensions and quantity of the pipes. The materials used for the wooden boxes must comply with international transportation standards and may require fumigation treatment to meet international quarantine requirements.

Manufacturing Processes

The ASTM A268 standard covers ferritic and martensitic stainless steel tubes used for corrosion-resistant and high-temperature applications. It explicitly specifies two primary manufacturing processes: seamless tubes and welded tubes.

Seamless Tubes (Seamless)

ASTM A268 standard-compliant seamless stainless steel tubes are produced using an integral forming process. They are manufactured by heating and piercing stainless steel round billets, followed by hot rolling, cold rolling, and other processing steps. These tubes have no weld seams, resulting in more uniform wall thickness and more reliable corrosion resistance, particularly in harsh environments involving high pressure, high temperature, or corrosive media.

Welded tubes (Welded)

ASTM A268 welded stainless steeltubes, on the other hand, are made from stainless steel strips that are rolled into shape and then welded using processes such as high-frequency resistance welding or argon arc welding. They offer high production efficiency and relatively low costs, making them suitable for large-diameter, long-distance pipeline installations. Although welded seams are present, strict weld seam processing and inspection, such as grinding and polishing, ultrasonic testing, etc., ensure weld seam quality, enabling them to play a crucial role in low-pressure transportation and building structural support applications, such as low-pressure transportation pipelines for petroleum and natural gas, and handrails in building decorations.

Why is ASTM A268 stainless steel tubing so popular?

Outstanding corrosion resistance

The steel grades covered by ASTM A268, such as TP410 and TP430, are primarily ferritic or martensitic stainless steels, making them particularly suitable for environments containing chlorides, acidic gases, or other corrosive media. These materials exhibit strong resistance to pitting corrosion and stress corrosion cracking, enabling them to operate reliably and stably for extended periods even in marine, chemical, or humid environments, thereby preventing severe corrosion issues such as crevice corrosion and significantly enhancing system reliability and service life.

Excellent high-temperature performance

ASTM A268 steel tubes maintain good performance in high-temperature environments, with their alloy composition providing excellent oxidation resistance and thermal stability. Even under continuous high-temperature operating conditions, they retain good mechanical strength and structural integrity, making them commonly used in high-temperature equipment such as heat exchangers, furnace tubes, and exhaust systems.

High strength and excellent wear resistance

Especially martensitic grades like TP410, which can significantly enhance hardness and strength after heat treatment. This makes them ideal for environments requiring high pressure or frequent wear, widely used in boiler systems, energy equipment, and various mechanical structures.

Excellent machinability and flexible installation

In addition to its superior performance, ASTM A268 stainless steel tubing offers excellent machinability, supporting conventional cutting, bending, welding, and forming processes.

Duplex Steel UNS S32750 and UNS S32760 pipes are two high-performance duplex stainless steels with good corrosion resistance, high strength and good weldability. These two materials are widely used in highly corrosive industries such as oil and gas, chemical, offshore, paper, power and other industries due to their reliable performance in harsh environments.

Duplex stainless steel because of its unique austenitic – ferritic duplex organization, both austenitic stainless steel excellent corrosion resistance and ferritic stainless steel high strength. UNS S32750 and UNS S32760, is based on ordinary duplex stainless steel, by increasing the content of chromium (Cr), molybdenum (Mo) and nitrogen (N) and other elements, to further improve its corrosion resistance and mechanical properties, so as to make it suitable for more demanding environments.

What is the difference between UNS S32750 and S32760?

UNS S32750 (2507) and UNS S32760 are both super duplex stainless steels with excellent performance. They are very similar in chromium, nickel, molybdenum and nitrogen content, but the key difference is that S32760 has additional copper (Cu) and tungsten (W).

S32750 (2507): It is a general-purpose super duplex steel that performs well in most chloride environments.

S32760 : Due to the addition of copper and tungsten, it has stronger corrosion resistance in reducing acids (especially sulfuric acid) and has a slight advantage in certain specific high corrosion/erosion combined environments. The selection should be based on the specific media and working conditions. If the environment contains sulfuric acid or requires extreme corrosion resistance, S32760 is often a better choice.

Duplex Steel Pipes Corrosion Resistance

Chloride Stress Corrosion Cracking (SCC) Resistance: This is one of the major weaknesses of austenitic stainless steels in chloride-containing environments, to which super duplex steels are extremely resistant.

Resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion: The high chromium, molybdenum and nitrogen content gives it an excellent pitting equivalent (PREN) value and excellent resistance to environments containing chloride ions, such as seawater.

Resistance to uniform corrosion: It also shows good corrosion resistance in a variety of acidic and alkaline environments.

Manufacturing Standards

ASTM A790/A790M: Standard Specification for Seamless and Welded Duplex Stainless Steel Pipe.

ASTM A928/A928M: Standard Specification for Electric Resistance-Welded and Fusion-Welded Duplex Stainless Steel Pipe for High-Pressure Service.

ASTM A999/A999M: General Requirements for Stainless Steel Pipe.

ASME B36.19M: Dimensional Standard for Stainless Steel Pipe.

EN 10216-5: European Standard for Stainless Steel Pipe.

NORSOK MDS (M-630): Norwegian petroleum industry standard with very stringent requirements for materials for offshore applications, often specifying super duplex stainless steels.

Benefits

✅ Extremely high strength (more than twice that of 316L)

✅ Excellent resistance to chlorine ions

✅ Excellent resistance to fatigue, impact and stress corrosion

✅ Stability in extreme environments

✅ Long service life, low maintenance and overall cost-effective performance.

Challenges and Considerations

Higher price: Due to the high content of alloying elements, the cost of duplex steel UNS S32750 and UNS S32760 pipes are generally higher than that of austenitic stainless steel and ordinary duplex stainless steel.

Processing difficulty: High strength and hardness make it more difficult to process (such as cutting and drilling) than austenitic stainless steel.

Welding process control: Heat input and cooling rate need to be strictly controlled during welding to maintain the ideal austenite-ferrite phase balance and avoid the precipitation of harmful phases (such as sigma phase), otherwise it will seriously damage the toughness and corrosion resistance of the material.

Common Applications

Offshore engineering equipment

Oil and gas industry

Pulp and paper equipment

Chemical processing systems

Reverse osmosis desalination units

Conclusion

Duplex steel UNS S32750 and S32760 pipes are characterized by their unique chemical composition, which gives them excellent performance in terms of strength, corrosion resistance and weldability. They are used in a wide range of important applications in the oil and gas, chemical, and offshore industries, where their performance is critical to the stable operation and development of each industry.
Main Features of UNS S31803 Duplex Stainless Steel Pipe

High corrosion resistance: Excellent resistance to a variety of corrosive media (especially chloride environments), including resistance to chloride stress corrosion cracking, pitting and crevice corrosion.

High strength: The yield strength is usually about twice that of common austenitic stainless steel (such as 304L/316L), which means that thinner wall thickness can be allowed in the design, thereby reducing weight and possibly reducing costs.

Duplex structure: Composed of approximately half austenite and half ferrite, this unique microstructure gives it the advantages of both austenite (toughness, corrosion resistance) and ferrite (high strength, stress corrosion resistance).

Good weldability: Compared with other high-strength materials, it has better weldability.

Wide application: Commonly used in industries with high requirements for corrosion resistance and strength, such as oil and gas, chemical industry, seawater desalination, and papermaking.

ASTM A335 alloy steel pipe is an alloy steel pipe produced in accordance with the A335 standard established by the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM). This standard covers the specifications for seamless ferritic alloy steel pipes suitable for high temperature service. The ASTM A335 standard specifies a variety of ferritic steel grades, which generally do not exceed 10% chromium content and belong to the range of medium and low alloy steels. Different grades correspond to different chemical compositions to meet the needs under different working conditions.

ASTM A335 alloy steel pipe has high strength and good toughness, and can withstand stress under high temperature and high pressure environments. Under high temperature environment, the alloy steel pipe can maintain good mechanical properties. With the increase of temperature, the decrease in its strength and toughness is relatively small, and it has good high temperature endurance strength and creep properties. This enables it to operate stably for a long time under high temperature and high pressure working conditions, such as the steam piping system of thermal power plants, and is not prone to deformation and rupture.

ASTM A335 alloy steel pipe is widely used in high temperature piping systems in industries such as petroleum, chemical industry, and electric power due to its excellent high temperature resistance and good mechanical properties.

What does ASTM mean in piping?

ASTM International was first formed in 1898 by a group of scientists and engineers, led by US chemist, Charles Dudley. It was first formed in order to combat the frequent rail breaks that were disturbing the railroad industry.

The group originally developed a standard of steel that had to be adhered to if it was going to be used to fabricate train track rails and that is how the standards started.

ASTM currently has more than 30,000 members, there are 12,500 Global ASTM standards I operation globally and more than 140 countries use the standards and participate with them.

ASTM international has spent many years researching, examining, testing and defining a wide range of materials for the oil and gas industry.

The properties of the materials in question depend mainly on their chemical make-up and how it reacts and performs in different environments. Design temperatures and pressure as well as methods of manufacture of pipes, fittings, flanges, valves, nuts and bolts are also taken into consideration.

What is alloy steel pipe?

Alloy steel pipes are made from alloyed steel, a form of steel that contains various elements in varying proportions to give it certain desired characteristics. It usually consists of carbon plus any other element like Nickel, Manganese, Silicon or Chromium. This addition can improve the mechanical properties of these pipes, such as strength and corrosion resistance, and provide enhanced physical properties they may require for specific applications. These alloyed steels are available in different grades, allowing them to be used for various purposes across multiple industries due to their versatility and unique composition.

ASTM A335 Alloy steel pipes are highly specialized and popular in the industrial world. This composition gives them exceptional strength, durability, and resistance to corrosion. These pipes have various applications ranging from automotive to construction industries due to their ability to withstand high temperatures and pressures. Also, these steel pipes offer cost-effective solutions compared to other materials like stainless steel or carbon steel. With their superior properties and versatility, it’s not surprising that they are widely used in different industries worldwide.

What is ASTM A335 material?

ASTM A335 Pipe (ASME S/A335, Chorme-Moly) is a seamless ferritic Alloy-Steel Pipe for high temperature service.

A335 is often called chrome moly pipe because of the chemical makeup of Molybdenum (Mo) and Chromium (Cr). Molybdenum increases the strength of steel as well as the elastic limit, resistance to wear, impact qualities, and hardenability. Moly increases the resistance to softening, restrains grain growth and makes chromium steel less susceptible to embrittlement. Moly is the most effective single additive that increases high temperature creep strength. It also enhances the corrosion resistance of steel, and inhibits pitting. Chromium (or chrome) is the essential constituent of stainless steel. Any steel with 12% or more Chrome is considered stainless.

The workers are welding flanges onto pipes. Those Flange Connection Pipes are part of Water Cooling System and Foam Fire Fighting System.

Water Cooling System – Tank Diameter = 22.28 M and 25.46 M

Foam Fire Fighting System – Tank Diameter = 22.28 M and 25.46 M

According to the drawing, we cut pipes into various length. And then welded A105 Blind Flange and S.O Flange on the pipe.

We conducted hydro test, 10% dye penetrant test and Magnetic particle test. After testing, we can guarantee that the connection and welding are in good quality.

After the test above, all materials will be hot dip galvanized.
