In piping systems, the union is one of the commonly used forged pipe fittings, primarily employed at pipeline locations requiring frequent disassembly, inspection, and maintenance. Knowing the MSS SP-83 union dimensions can help engineers accurately select and install them.A union consists of three parts: a pair of fittings with internal threads or socket weld ends, and an intermediate threaded ring, making installation and removal highly convenient. MSS SP-83 is an internationally adopted standard for union fittings, covering both socket weld and threaded connection configurations.

What is a union?

A union, also known as a union joint, is a component used for removable connections between pipes. It typically consists of three parts: a male end, a female end, and a gasket. The male and female ends are connected to the two pipes to be joined, achieving a tight seal through threaded connections, while the gasket serves as a seal to prevent leakage of the medium inside the pipes.

Compared to traditional welding or flange connections, the most significant feature of union is their removability. This feature makes pipeline installation, maintenance, and replacement more convenient, eliminating the need for destructive operations on the pipeline, significantly improving work efficiency, and reducing maintenance costs.

Types of Unions

Socket Weld Union:

Socket welding involves inserting a steel pipe into a socket hole for welding, hence the term socket weld union. A socket coupling consists of a socket, a spigot, and a socket groove, with the distinctive feature of a socket groove on the spigot, and the spigot and socket located at opposite ends. Socket unions can be widely applied to pipes of various diameters and are also suitable for water meters and valves. Due to the socket structure, pipe joints reduce costs and offer extremely convenient installation, use, and maintenance, while also providing excellent leak prevention capabilities, making them highly promising in the market.

Threaded Union:

Threaded connections involve screwing steel pipes into threaded holes for connection, hence the term threaded union.Threaded unions are the most common type of joint, characterized by using a threaded connection method for pipe connections. They primarily consist of three parts: a male end with external threads, a female end with internal threads, and a nut. By rotating the nut, the sealing surfaces of the male and female ends can be tightly aligned, thereby achieving connection and sealing. Thread forms can include BSP, NPT, G, etc., and the connection is further secured using a locking nut and a seal ring. Suitable for small-diameter pipes, threaded connections achieve pipe sealing. They are easy to install and commonly used in water pipes, gas pipes, and other applications.

ASME B16.11 socket weld tee is a high-pressure pipe connection component forged from round steel or ingots and then lathe-machined. It is used to achieve a “one pipe, two branches” configuration in piping systems. Its core structure consists of three ports: a main pipe port and two branch pipe ports, all connected using socket welding. Unlike conventional threaded or butt-weld tees, a socket weld tee features a “socket-and-spigot” design. The pipe can be directly inserted into the socket and then secured by welding, creating a tight, sealed connection. Socket weld tees are primarily used in high-pressure, precision applications such as the petrochemical, power generation, aerospace, and defense industries. Its manufacturing process involves hot pressing, radial compression, and branch pipe stretching, unlike the metal compensation method used in hydroforming.

Forged socket weld tees are categorized by construction as either equal or reduced. Sizes range from DN6 to DN100, with DN15 to DN50 being the most common. Materials include carbon steel, stainless steel, and alloy steel. Pressure ratings include 3000 lbf, 6000 lbf, and SCH80. The product complies with the American standard ASME B16.11.

Equal Socket Weld Tee

An equal-diameter socket weld tee has three identical pipe openings and is commonly used in piping systems with identical main and branch pipe sizes. It ensures even flow distribution or confluence between the main and branch pipes, maintaining flow stability and pressure balance. Equal-diameter tees are widely used in applications requiring high fluid transport requirements, such as the oil and gas, chemical, and power industries.

Reducing Socket Weld Tee

A reducing socket weld tee has branch pipes with smaller diameters than the main pipe and is used to connect main and branch pipes of different sizes. It allows for a transition in pipe diameter when branching, effectively adjusting flow and pressure, and optimizing the efficiency of the piping system. Reducing tees are often used in applications requiring variable flow rates or flow split ratios, and are particularly common in high-pressure, high-temperature, and corrosion-resistant pipeline projects.

On 6th, August, one client from Vietnam inquired some carbon steel & stainless steel class 3000 forged fittings. Since there were special requirements on both end of the fittings, we emailed this clients for more details. An hour later, the client replied with concrete image and stated clearly about his demand. To discuss more conveniently, we moved to whatsapp and the client satisfied with the photos, which is perfectly complied with his requirement. One week later, the client added new items for quotation and placed order for all the items inquired.

Since the client reflected that the goods they bought before were not what they exactly want, we paid more attention on checking details. And we promised to show goods photos before shipment which is actually our common act to all of our customers. The following is the WhatsApp chat record between our company and customers, which gives positive feedback on our professional service.

Stainless steel 90 degree elbows are one of the most widely used fittings in industrial piping systems. Their primary function is to change the direction of the pipeline by 90 degrees, enabling the piping system to make a 90-degree turn at a specific location and thereby alter the flow direction of the fluid. Depending on manufacturing processes, connection methods, and structural design, stainless steel 90 degree elbows can be categorized into various types, including long-radius and short-radius elbows, butt weld elbows, socket weld elbows, and threaded elbows. Stainless steel elbows offer excellent strength, durability, and corrosion resistance, making them suitable for a wide range of industries including petroleum and natural gas, chemicals, power plants, and water treatment.

Manufacturing Process of Stainless Steel Elbow

Pushing Process

This is a commonly used process. First, the stainless steel tube blank is heated to the appropriate temperature, then a specialized pushing machine is used to shape the tube blank into a 90-degree elbow using a die. The pushing process has high production efficiency, enabling large-scale production, and produces elbows with high dimensional accuracy and good surface quality.

Stamping Process

For smaller stainless steel 90 degree elbows, the stamping process can be used. Stainless steel sheets are cut into the appropriate shape, placed into a stamping die, and then pressed into the rough shape of an elbow using a stamping machine. Subsequent welding and finishing processes are then performed. The stamping process is suitable for mass production of elbows with relatively simple shapes.

Welding Process

First, the stainless steel sheet is rolled into two 90 degree curved sections, which are then welded together to form a 90 degree elbow. The welding process can produce large-diameter elbows but requires high-quality welding techniques to ensure the strength and sealing of the welds.

Classification by Bending Radius

Long Radius (LR) 90° Elbow:

The radius of curvature (R) is 1.5 times the nominal pipe size (NPS) or outside diameter (D). (R = 1.5D). This provides a smoother turn, reducing friction, turbulence, and pressure drop. It’s generally preferred when space allows and flow efficiency is critical.

Short Radius (SR) 90° Elbow:

The radius of curvature (R) is equal to the nominal pipe size (NPS) or outside diameter (D). (R = 1.0D). This results in a sharper turn, increasing turbulence and pressure drop, but it is more compact and suitable for tight spaces where a smaller bend is necessary.

Classification by Material:

Based on the different grades of stainless steel used, stainless steel 90 degree elbows can be categorized into 304 stainless steel 90 degree elbows, 316 stainless steel 90 degree elbows, 321 stainless steel 90 degree elbows, etc. Elbows made from different materials exhibit variations in corrosion resistance, high-temperature resistance, and other properties, making them suitable for different operational environments. The following chemical composition and mechanical properties are provided as examples for 304 and 316.

Classification by Connection Type

Butt Weld Elbow

Stainless steel 90-degree elbows are welded to tightly connect pipes, offering high strength and excellent sealing. They are the most common type in industrial piping systems. They can withstand high pressure and high temperature operating environments with virtually no leakage, making them particularly suitable for large-diameter, high-pressure, or high-temperature piping systems. However, this connection is not removable, requiring pipe cutting for repair or replacement.

Socket Weld Elbow

Socket-weld elbows are constructed by inserting the pipe into the socket of the elbow and then welding the elbow externally. They are commonly used for small-diameter, high-pressure pipes. They provide a secure connection, strong sealing, and are unlikely to leak, making them particularly suitable for high-pressure applications. Installation is relatively simple, making them particularly suitable for small-diameter pipes. However, the internal socket structure does introduce some fluid resistance.

Threaded Elbow

Threaded elbows connect pipes via threads, with both internal and external threads being common. They are primarily used for small-diameter, low-pressure pipes. They offer advantages such as easy installation and multiple disassembly capabilities, making them particularly suitable for pipe systems that require frequent disassembly or maintenance. However, the sealing performance is relatively weak and leakage is likely to occur under high pressure or vibration conditions, so it is not suitable for high temperature and high pressure environments.

Stainless Steel 90 Degree Elbow Applications

A union is a type of pipe fitting that allows for easy disassembly. It consists of three components: a male end, a female end, and a gasket.

Its structural features include an external thread on the male end, an internal thread on the female end, and a threaded connection between the two, with a gasket placed in between to ensure sealing. Union fittings are available in various materials, including copper, stainless steel, cast iron, and plastic. Selection should be based on factors such as the pipeline medium, pressure, and temperature.

Different Types of Pipe Unions

A pipe union is a type of detachable pipe fitting connection consisting of two end joints and a locking nut in the middle, enabling quick assembly and disassembly without rotating the pipe body. Depending on the connection method, pipe unions are mainly divided into two categories: socket weld unions and threaded unions. These two types differ significantly in terms of structural design, installation method, sealing performance, and applicable scenarios.

Socket Weld Unions

Socket weld unions are primarily used in piping systems that require a more secure and reliable connection. Unlike threaded unions, the ends of socket weld unions feature sockets, into which the pipes are inserted and then welded along the socket edges. The two ends of the unions are secured together using nuts or clamps, and metal or non-metal seals are installed at the connection surfaces to ensure reliable sealing. Similar to threaded unions, they also include a nut for connection and sealing.

Advantages of Socket Weld Unions:

Reliable and secure connection: Welded connections have significantly higher strength than threaded connections, capable of withstanding higher pressures and vibrations.

Excellent leak prevention: Welding provides a permanent leak-proof seal, suitable for applications with extremely high sealing requirements.

Easy installation: Socket weld unions do not require precise alignment during installation, making the process relatively simple.

Disadvantages of Socket Weld Unions:

Welding construction is required, resulting in longer installation and disassembly times.

The heat-affected zone from welding may alter metal properties, necessitating strict welding procedures.

Threaded Union

The threaded union is the most widely used type of union, characterized by its use of threaded connections for piping. It consists of three main components: a male end with external threads, a female end with internal threads, and a nut. By rotating the nut, the sealing surfaces of the male and female ends can be tightly aligned to achieve connection and sealing. The thread forms can be BSP, NPT, G, etc., and the connection is further secured by a locking nut and seal ring.

Advantages of Threaded Unions

Easy to install, no welding required, suitable for quick on-site construction.

Facilitates disassembly, maintenance, and replacement of pipeline systems.

Suitable for applications where welding is not feasible.

Disadvantages of Threaded Unions

Threaded connections are prone to loosening due to thermal expansion and contraction and vibration, resulting in slightly lower sealing performance compared to welded types.

Not suitable for long-term use in high-pressure, high-temperature, or highly corrosive environments.

In industrial pipeline connection systems, pipe couplings are an indispensable type of pipe fitting used to connect two sections of pipeline, enabling the continuous transportation of fluids or gases. As a critically important type of pipe fitting in pipeline connections, pipe couplings are widely used in high-pressure pipeline systems with diameters of 4 inches or less. They offer advantages such as easy installation, safety and stability, excellent sealing performance, corrosion resistance, and high-temperature resistance, and are extensively applied in industries such as petroleum, natural gas, chemicals, and water treatment.

Different Types of Pipe Couplings

Socket weld pipe couplings

Pipe couplings that connect pipes using a socket-welded joint are called socket-welded pipe couplings. This connection method involves inserting a steel pipe into a socket hole and welding it in place. This connection method does not require complex threading or welding operations, making installation convenient and ensuring reliable sealing. It features a compact structure, strong pressure resistance, and excellent sealing performance, and is commonly used in high-pressure and high-temperature environments. They are widely applied in fields such as water supply and drainage, and municipal engineering. Depending on the number of sockets, socket weld pipe couplings can be classified into single-socket pipe couplings and fullsocket pipe couplings.

Socket Weld Half Couplings

Socket Weld Half Coupling have a socket on one end, while the other end is typically a flat end or features other connection structures. They are primarily used to connect a pipe with a socket to another pipe with a flat end, or as transition connectors when changing direction or branching within a pipe system.

Socket Weld Full Coupling

Socket weld full coupling have sockets on both ends and are specifically designed to connect two pipes with sockets, enabling the two pipes to be aligned in a straight line. In long-distance pipe laying, double socket pipe couplings play a particularly important role. The connection method of double socket pipe couplings effectively resists axial displacement caused by thermal expansion and contraction of the pipes, ensuring the stability of the pipe system, while also facilitating maintenance and replacement in the future.

Threaded Pipe Couplings

Threaded pipe couplings rely on the interlocking of internal and external threads to connect pipes, offering high connection strength and easy disassembly. They are suitable for pipe systems that require frequent maintenance or disassembly and are commonly used in industrial equipment, household water supply, and other fields. Depending on the number of threads, threaded pipe couplings can be divided into half threaded pipe couplings and full threaded pipe couplings.

Threaded Half Coupling

One end of this coupling has threads, while the other end is typically a socket or welded end. It is commonly used to connect threaded pipes to non-threaded pipes or equipment, offering flexibility in connection methods. The design of the half threaded pipe coupling allows for greater flexibility when connecting different types of pipes or equipment, compensating for differences in connection forms between pipes and equipment interfaces.

Threaded Full Coupling

Both ends of the double threaded pipe coupling have threads machined on the inner walls, used to connect two pipes with external threads, enabling the two pipes to be securely connected in a straight line. This type of pipe coupling is widely used in industrial pipeline systems, especially in high-pressure pipelines transporting gases, liquids, and other media. It is most commonly used to connect two threaded pipes, simply by screwing the pipes into both ends of the coupling. Due to its ease of installation and disassembly, it is highly convenient in pipeline systems requiring frequent maintenance or modifications. Additionally, full threaded pipe couplings can be selected with different thread specifications to accommodate pipeline connections of varying diameters and pressure ratings.

Carbon Steel Pipe Coupling

ASTM A105 / A105N

ASTM A350 LF2 / LF3

ASTM A694 F42 / 46 / 52 / 56 / 65 / 70

Carbon steel pipe couplings, which use carbon as the primary alloying element, offer high strength, good ductility, and relatively low cost, making them a commonly used connection component in industrial and residential piping systems. They are suitable for low-pressure pipelines transporting non-corrosive or weakly corrosive media such as water, steam, and air, and are widely applied in building plumbing and heating systems. However, carbon steel has poor corrosion resistance and is prone to rusting in humid or corrosive environments. Therefore, it typically requires corrosion-resistant treatments such as galvanization to extend its service life.

Alloy Steel Pipe Coupling

ASTM / ASME A/SA 182 & A 387 F1, F5, F9, F11, F12, F22, F91

Alloy steel pipe couplings are made by adding alloy elements such as chromium, nickel, and molybdenum to carbon steel. The addition of these elements significantly improves the mechanical properties and corrosion resistance of the pipe couplings. They can withstand higher pressures and temperatures and are suitable for use in industries such as petroleum, chemical, and power, where they are used in pipeline systems that transport high-temperature, high-pressure media or media containing certain corrosive components.

Stainless Steel Pipe Coupling

ASTM A182, A240 F304, 304L, 304H, 316, 316L, 316Ti, 310, 310S, 321, 321H, 317, 347, 347H, 904L

ASTM A182 F44, F45, F51, F 53, F 55, F 60, F61

Stainless steel pipe couplings contain a high proportion of chromium and nickel, forming a dense oxide film that provides excellent corrosion resistance and oxidation resistance, enabling long-term use in corrosive environments such as humid or acidic/alkaline conditions. They are widely used in pipeline systems requiring high hygiene standards or exposure to strong corrosive media, such as food processing, pharmaceutical manufacturing, and chemical industries. Additionally, stainless steel pipe couplings have a smooth surface, are easy to clean, and do not require additional corrosion protection, resulting in low maintenance costs. They are an ideal choice for those seeking high-quality and long-lasting pipe connections.

How to choose?

Selecting the appropriate pipe coupling structure is critical based on different pipeline application requirements:

For high-temperature, high-pressure, or corrosive environments, we recommend using socket weld pipe couplings to ensure welding strength and sealing safety.

For medium – to – low – pressure applications, non-permanent connections, or systems requiring easy maintenance, threaded pipe couplings can be used for quick disassembly and replacement.

In special scenarios, such as when only one side of the pipe or equipment needs to be connected, half socket or half threaded pipe couplings can be used, offering a more compact structure and saving space.

Types of Forged Fittings

Forged fittings are primarily divided into two categories: socket weld fittings and threaded fittings.

Socket weld fittings: Socket weld fittings are widely used in piping systems. They feature an end with a socket-like opening, into which the pipe is inserted and then welded. 316L stainless steel socket weld fittings provide a secure and sealed connection. These fittings are typically used in applications where pipe sizes are relatively small and high-integrity connections are required, such as in chemical and petrochemical plants.

Threaded fittings: Threaded fittings have internal or external threads machined at their ends. They adhere to different thread standards, such as NPT and BSP. Threaded fittings are commonly used in medium-to-low-pressure applications and in systems that may require frequent modifications or maintenance.

Socket Weld Fittings Dimension

Socket weld fittings primarily include socket weld caps, socket weld elbows, socket weld tee, socket weld cross, and socket weld coupling. These fittings are connected to pipes via socket weld joints and are widely used in high-pressure, small-diameter fluid conveyance systems. They feature a compact structure, easy installation, and excellent sealing performance.

Threaded Fittings Dimension

Threaded pipe fittings include threaded elbow, threaded tee, threaded cross, threaded coupling, threaded cap, threaded union, threaded nipple, threaded hex nipple, tapered threaded nipple, threaded plug, and threaded reducer. These fittings are connected via threaded connections and are suitable for small-diameter pipeline systems that do not require welding and involve frequent installation and disassembly. They are widely used in industries such as petroleum, chemicals, and equipment piping.

Forging Process for Forged Pipe Fittings

① Die Forging

Suitable for small pipe fittings such as tees, crosses, and elbows. These fittings use socket welds and threads, and their complex shapes require die forging.

The raw material for forging should be rolled profiles, such as bars, thick-walled tubes, or plates. When using ingots as raw material, the ingots should be pre-rolled into bars or forged into ingots for use as die forging raw material to eliminate defects such as segregation and porosity in the ingots.

After heating, the billet is placed into the die for forging, where pressure causes the metal to flow and fill the die cavity. If the forged billet has flash, it must undergo a stamping process to remove the remaining flash, thereby completing all die forging operations.

② Free Forging

Special-shaped or unsuitable pipe fittings can be manufactured using free forging processes. Free forging should produce the approximate shape of the pipe fitting; for example, tees and branches should be forged.

③ Cutting.

Some tubular fittings can be directly cut from bars or thick-walled tubes to form the desired shape, such as double-sleeve couplings and union fittings. When processing metallic materials, the fiber flow direction should be roughly parallel to the axial direction of the fitting. Tees, crosses, elbows, and fittings shall not be directly cut from reinforcing bars to form the desired shape.

Stainless Steel Forged Flanges

Flanges are disc-shaped or ring-shaped parts used to connect pipes, valves, pumps, and other equipment, forming an integrated pipe system through bolt connections.

Stainless steel forged flanges are manufactured from stainless steel materials (such as 304, 316, 316L, etc.) through a forging process. Compared to cast flanges, the forging process eliminates internal defects in the metal, resulting in a denser structure, finer grain size, and better mechanical properties, enabling them to withstand higher pressures and temperatures.

Manufacturing Process: Forging vs. Casting

Forging

By heating stainless steel billets and then applying external pressure (such as hammering or stamping), plastic deformation occurs, ultimately forming the final shape.

Performance Characteristics:

High strength and toughness: Forged parts have a uniform and dense internal structure, enabling them to withstand higher pressures, impacts, and fatigue loads.

Durability: Forged components have a long service life and are particularly suitable for long-term use in harsh conditions such as high temperatures, high pressures, and high stresses.

High strength and toughness: The strength and impact resistance of forged components far exceed those of castings.

Better sealing performance: Forged components lack casting defects such as porosity and inclusions, ensuring no leaks at connection points.

Durability: The structure is more compact, resulting in a longer service life.

Casting

Stainless steel is heated to a molten state and then poured into a pre-prepared mold. After cooling and solidifying, it is demolded to form the final product.

Performance characteristics:

Lower mechanical properties: Due to potential internal defects, castings typically have lower strength, toughness, fatigue strength, and impact resistance compared to forgings.

Prone to defects: Internal defects such as porosity, shrinkage cavities, and inclusions may exist, affecting strength and sealing performance.

Poor sealing performance: Internal defects may serve as potential pathways for fluid leakage, posing greater risks under high-pressure conditions.

Conclusion:

Although the casting process is cost-effective, for critical applications in industries such as petroleum, chemicals, and nuclear power that demand the highest levels of safety and reliability, the forging process is undeniably the preferred choice. Its superior mechanical properties and sealing performance ensure the long-term stable operation of pipeline systems and minimize safety risks to the greatest extent possible.

Stainless steel elbows are fittings used to connect pipes and change the direction of pipelines, typically made from stainless steel.

The primary function of stainless steel elbows is to connect two pipes with the same or different nominal diameters in a piping system, enabling the pipeline to turn at a specific angle. Based on the angle, the most commonly used types are 45°, 90°, and 180°. Additionally, depending on engineering requirements, other non-standard angles such as 60° are also available. Connection methods to pipes include direct welding, flange connections, threaded connections, and socket connections, among others.

Classification by Angle

1. 45 Degree Elbow

Turn angle: Achieves a 45° directional deflection, suitable for long-distance pipelines requiring minor directional adjustments or when the angle between two pipeline sections is 45°. Primarily used for minor changes in pipeline direction or scenarios requiring mitigation of fluid impact force.

2. 90° Degree Elbow

Bending angle: Achieves a 90° right-angle turn, the most commonly used type, suitable for “vertical/horizontal direction switching” scenarios (e.g., pipelines transitioning from the ground to walls, or right-angle connections between equipment inlets/outlets).

3. 180 Degree Elbow

Bending angle: Achieves a 180° U-turn (U-shaped bend), essentially a “reverse bend” where the fluid direction is completely reversed. Primarily used to change the fluid direction by 180 degrees, commonly found in U-shaped piping, heat exchangers, and other equipment to save space or achieve special process requirements.

Classification by Bending Radius

Long Radius Elbow (LR Elbow): The bending radius is 1.5 times the pipe diameter (R=1.5D). It has low fluid resistance and a smooth change in flow direction, making it suitable for applications requiring low fluid resistance, where the conveyed medium has low viscosity, or contains solid particles.

Short-radius elbows (SR Elbow): The bending radius is equal to the pipe diameter (R=1D). They have relatively higher fluid resistance but are structurally compact and space-saving, making them suitable for applications with limited space or where fluid resistance requirements are not stringent.

2D indicates that the bending radius is twice the nominal diameter of the pipe, and similarly, 3D indicates twice the nominal diameter of the pipe. These also belong to the category of long-radius elbows, but they differ from the commonly used 1.5D elbows in that they are smoother and are suitable for specific applications.

Classification by Connection Types

Butt weld Elbows: These are connected to pipes using welding, with flat ends designed to be directly welded to the pipe ends to form an integrated sealed structure. This connection method is suitable for medium- and high-pressure pipeline systems, particularly in large-diameter (DN50 and above) applications, where it offers significant advantages. It can withstand high pressures and temperatures, and the welded joints have high strength and excellent sealing properties, effectively preventing medium leakage.

Socket Weld Elbows: Features a socket with a groove-shaped opening, allowing the pipe end to be directly inserted into the socket. Sealing is achieved through a seal ring or welding (socket-weld). Socket-weld connections offer reliable sealing performance, suitable for applications requiring high sealing integrity but operating within the medium-pressure range. This method also reduces issues caused by improper welding and allows for relatively easy disassembly during maintenance.

Threaded Elbows: These have threads on the inner or outer walls and can be connected to pipes with corresponding threads via a screw-tightening method, without welding, forming a removable connection. This method is suitable for low-pressure, small-diameter pipes, offering fast installation and ease of maintenance and replacement. However, the sealing performance of threaded joints is significantly influenced by thread precision and sealing materials, making them unsuitable for high-pressure, high-temperature, or highly corrosive medium transportation systems.

Stainless Steel Elbow 45, 90, 180 Degree Material

The material of stainless steel elbows is usually selected according to the use environment and medium. Common ones are:

304 stainless steel: The most commonly used stainless steel material, with good corrosion resistance and processing performance, suitable for general corrosive environments.

316/316L stainless steel: Molybdenum is added, which has better resistance to chloride ion corrosion and is suitable for marine environments, chemicals, medicines and other occasions with higher requirements for corrosion resistance. 316L is a low-carbon version of 316 with better welding performance.

Other stainless steel grades: According to special needs, 201, 202, 321, 904L, duplex stainless steel (such as 2205, 2507), etc. can also be selected to meet different requirements for temperature resistance, pressure resistance, corrosion resistance, etc.

Duplex steels S31803 & S32205 forged fittings are widely used austenitic – ferritic duplex stainless steel grades, combining the corrosion resistance of austenitic stainless steels with the high strength of ferritic stainless steels. In the field of forged pipe fittings, they are used for the manufacture of piping fittings that are resistant to high pressures, temperatures and corrosive environments, such as elbows, tees, socket weld fittings, threaded pipe caps, etc.

Duplex stainless steels S31803 and S32205 are duplex stainless steels of type 2205 (UNS No. S31803 and S32205, respectively), and their wrought fittings are widely used in piping systems under harsh working conditions due to the dual characteristics of austenite and ferritic.

S31803 & S32205 Overview

Duplex stainless steels are called “duplex” because their microstructure consists of approximately equal amounts of austenite (FCC) and ferrite (BCC). This unique two-phase structure gives them properties that are superior to single austenitic or ferritic stainless steels:

High Strength: Yield strength is typically twice that of austenitic stainless steels (e.g., 304L, 316L), which allows thinner wall thicknesses in design and fabrication, resulting in weight and cost reductions.

Excellent corrosion resistance: Excellent resistance to pitting, crevice corrosion, intergranular corrosion and stress corrosion cracking (SCC), especially in chloride-containing environments. This is primarily due to its high chromium (Cr), molybdenum (Mo) and nitrogen (N) content.

Good weldability: Duplex steels S31803 & S32205 forged fittings have better weldability than some other high-alloyed steels.

Low Coefficient of Thermal Expansion and High Thermal Conductivity: Compared to austenitic stainless steels, duplex stainless steels have a lower coefficient of thermal expansion and better thermal conductivity.

S31803 is the original 2205 duplex stainless steel grade. Subsequently, in order to obtain superior corrosion resistance and avoid the formation of intermetallic phases, by more strictly controlling the content range of chromium, molybdenum and nitrogen, S32205 grade was developed.S32205 is an optimized version of S31803, which is usually superior in performance, so in many cases 2205 duplex stainless steels are referred to as S32205.

Advantages of Forged Fittings

Optimized grain structure: The forging process refines the grains and eliminates internal defects by applying pressure to the metal and causing it to plastically deform at high temperatures, so that the metal grains are aligned along the direction of the stress to form a denser, more uniform fibrous tissue.

Higher strength and toughness: Duplex steels S31803 & S32205 forged fittings have more excellent mechanical properties, including higher yield strength, tensile strength and impact toughness, as well as better fatigue resistance.

Better corrosion resistance: uniform and dense grain structure and the elimination of internal defects to help improve the overall corrosion resistance of the pipe fittings, reducing corrosion-sensitive areas.

Longer service life: Combined, Duplex stainless steels S31803 & S32205 forged fittings provide more stable performance and longer service life under severe service conditions.

Dimensional accuracy and surface quality: Precision forging provides better dimensional accuracy and surface quality, reducing the need for subsequent machining.

Manufacturing Process of Forged Fittings

Forging: Plastic deformation of heated raw material on forging equipment to form the preliminary shape of pipe fittings such as elbows, tees, flanges, etc. Forging can be free forging or die forging.

Heat Treatment: Solution treatment is required after forging. This usually involves solution annealing at elevated temperatures (e.g. 1020-1100 °C) followed by rapid cooling (e.g. water quenching) to ensure that the austenite and ferrite phases are in balance and that no harmful intermetallic phases precipitate, thus restoring and optimizing the material’s organization and properties.

Machining and Finishing: Machining, chamfering, polishing, etc. of the forged and heat-treated fittings to achieve final dimensional accuracy and surface finish.

Inspection: Rigorous quality inspection, including chemical composition analysis, mechanical property testing (tensile, impact, hardness), metallographic examination, non-destructive testing (e.g. ultrasonic, ray detection) and dimensional inspection.

Types of Duplex Steel Forged Fittings

Duplex steels S31803 & S32205 forged fittings are primarily categorized by their connection method into two main types: Threaded Fittings and Socket Weld Fittings.

These two connection methods determine how the fittings are installed and connected within a piping system, which in turn dictates their respective application scenarios, pressure ratings, and specific advantages and disadvantages.

Threaded (THD / Screwed) Fittings:

Characteristics: The fitting has internal or external threads (usually NPT or BSPT standards) that connect to the pipe via a threaded connection.

Applications: Suitable for small-bore, medium-to-low pressure, non-critical piping systems. They are easy to install and disassemble, requiring no welding. Commonly used in instrumentation lines, hydraulic systems, and pneumatic systems.

Pressure Ratings: Typically available in Class 2000 LBS, 3000 LBS, 6000 LBS, etc.

Socket Weld (SW) Fittings:

Characteristics: The fitting has an internal bore (socket) into which the pipe is inserted. The connection is then made by a fillet weld on the exterior of the fitting. This means the weld is outside the pipe, preventing it from affecting the pipe’s inner diameter.

Applications: Suitable for small-bore, high-pressure, high-temperature piping systems, especially those where a smooth internal wall is not strictly required, or where internal corrosion or scaling needs to be prevented (since the weld is external). Commonly used in the chemical, petroleum, and power industries.

Pressure Ratings: Typically available in Class 3000 LBS, 6000 LBS, 9000 LBS, etc.
