What is Weldolet

The Weldolet is a branch connection fitting used in piping systems to connect branches from a main pipe to smaller pipes or pipe components. It is designed to create a smooth transition between the main pipe and the branch, promoting efficient flow of fluids or gases while minimizing turbulence. The design of the weldolet minimizes stress concentration and provides overall reinforcement. The butt-weld pipe branch is available in three pressure grades: STD, XS and Sch160.

Olet Fittings

A olet provides a branching point from a large-diameter pipe to a smaller-diameter pipe. The pipe welded onto the tee is called the main pipe, while the pipe welded onto the tee is called the branch pipe. Olet fittings come in full sizes, types, bores, and pressure ratings. Materials can include stainless steel, chromium-molybdenum alloy, or other alloy materials.

Olet fittings are providing an outlet from a larger pipe to a smaller one. They are used to instead of connected fittings such as reducing tees, reinforcing plates, and reinforced pipe sections.

There are many types based on the varity piping connected methods that weldolet, thredolet, sockolet, latrolet, elbolet, nipolet, sweepolet and flangolet. Why they are popular, because its outstanding advantages, such as safety, reliability, low cost and simple construction.

ASTM A105 Carbon Steel Weldolet

ASTM A105 is a commonly used standard for carbon steel forging materials, employed in the manufacture of various pipe fittings for pipeline systems, including Weldolet. The selection of this material for weldolet primarily leverages the superior properties of carbon steel to meet specific pipeline connection requirements under given operating conditions.

ASTM A182 Weldolet

ASTM A182 is a material standard for forged or rolled alloy steel and stainless steel pipe fittings suitable for high-temperature service. Therefore, ASTM A182 butt-welded branch seats serve as an ideal replacement for carbon steel (such as ASTM A105) in applications demanding superior material strength, corrosion resistance, and high-temperature performance.

Alloy Steel

Alloy steel grades specified in the ASTM A182 standard are typically chromium-molybdenum steels (Cr-Mo steels). These grades are made by adding chromium (Cr) and molybdenum (Mo) to improve their high-temperature strength, creep resistance, and corrosion resistance. These steels typically require heat treatment to achieve the desired mechanical properties.

Advantages of SS316L

1. Excellent Corrosion Resistance

SS316L contains 2-3% molybdenum in its chemical composition, which gives it significantly better corrosion resistance than 304 stainless steel in chloride environments. It effectively resists pitting and crevice corrosion, making it ideal for marine environments, coastal areas, and applications involving chloride-containing media.

2. Excellent Welding Performance

“L” stands for “Low Carbon.” SS316L has a carbon content below 0.03%, significantly reducing the risk of carbide precipitation (also known as “sensitization”) during welding. This property prevents intergranular corrosion near the weld seam, ensuring the integrity and long-term stability of the welded joint in corrosive environments. Therefore, in pipeline systems requiring extensive welding, SS316L is a superior choice over 316.

3. High strength at high temperatures

SS316L maintains high tensile strength and creep strength even at high temperatures. This makes it suitable for high-temperature, high-pressure piping systems, such as heat exchangers and pressure vessels.

Types of Forged Fittings

Forged fittings are primarily divided into two categories: socket weld fittings and threaded fittings.

Socket weld fittings: Socket weld fittings are widely used in piping systems. They feature an end with a socket-like opening, into which the pipe is inserted and then welded. 316L stainless steel socket weld fittings provide a secure and sealed connection. These fittings are typically used in applications where pipe sizes are relatively small and high-integrity connections are required, such as in chemical and petrochemical plants.

Threaded fittings: Threaded fittings have internal or external threads machined at their ends. They adhere to different thread standards, such as NPT and BSP. Threaded fittings are commonly used in medium-to-low-pressure applications and in systems that may require frequent modifications or maintenance.

Socket Weld Fittings Dimension

Socket weld fittings primarily include socket weld caps, socket weld elbows, socket weld tee, socket weld cross, and socket weld coupling. These fittings are connected to pipes via socket weld joints and are widely used in high-pressure, small-diameter fluid conveyance systems. They feature a compact structure, easy installation, and excellent sealing performance.

Threaded pipe fittings include threaded elbow, threaded tee, threaded cross, threaded coupling, threaded cap, threaded union, threaded nipple, threaded hex nipple, tapered threaded nipple, threaded plug, and threaded reducer. These fittings are connected via threaded connections and are suitable for small-diameter pipeline systems that do not require welding and involve frequent installation and disassembly. They are widely used in industries such as petroleum, chemicals, and equipment piping.

Forging Process for Forged Pipe Fittings

① Die Forging

Suitable for small pipe fittings such as tees, crosses, and elbows. These fittings use socket welds and threads, and their complex shapes require die forging.

The raw material for forging should be rolled profiles, such as bars, thick-walled tubes, or plates. When using ingots as raw material, the ingots should be pre-rolled into bars or forged into ingots for use as die forging raw material to eliminate defects such as segregation and porosity in the ingots.

After heating, the billet is placed into the die for forging, where pressure causes the metal to flow and fill the die cavity. If the forged billet has flash, it must undergo a stamping process to remove the remaining flash, thereby completing all die forging operations.

② Free Forging

Special-shaped or unsuitable pipe fittings can be manufactured using free forging processes. Free forging should produce the approximate shape of the pipe fitting; for example, tees and branches should be forged.

③ Cutting.

Some tubular fittings can be directly cut from bars or thick-walled tubes to form the desired shape, such as double-sleeve couplings and union fittings. When processing metallic materials, the fiber flow direction should be roughly parallel to the axial direction of the fitting. Tees, crosses, elbows, and fittings shall not be directly cut from reinforcing bars to form the desired shape.

What is a 316 stainless steel threaded Nipple?

A threaded nipple is a short pipe fitting with threads on both ends, commonly used to connect two sections of pipe, valves, or equipment. It is easy to install and does not require welding. The 316 stainless steel short section is made of austenitic stainless steel containing molybdenum (Mo), which offers stronger corrosion resistance than 304 stainless steel. It is particularly suitable for working environments containing chloride ions or acidic/alkaline media.

Classification of Threaded Nipple

One end threaded nipple

One end threaded nipple have threads machined on one end and a flat surface or socket on the other end, designed for connecting pipes that require threaded connections on one end. This structure makes them suitable for specific connection applications in piping systems. For example, when connecting equipment with an internal threaded joint to a pipe, the non-threaded end of the one end threaded nipple can be welded to the pipe or connected in another manner, while the threaded end is connected to the equipment’s internal threaded joint via the threaded connection.

Both end threaded nipple

Both end threaded nipple are threaded, making it suitable for connecting pipes or fittings that require threaded connections on both ends. This provides greater flexibility in pipe connections. Both end threaded nipple can be used to directly connect two pipes with external threads, or to connect a pipe with external threads to a device or fitting with internal threads.

Stainless Steel Forged Flanges

Flanges are disc-shaped or ring-shaped parts used to connect pipes, valves, pumps, and other equipment, forming an integrated pipe system through bolt connections.

Stainless steel forged flanges are manufactured from stainless steel materials (such as 304, 316, 316L, etc.) through a forging process. Compared to cast flanges, the forging process eliminates internal defects in the metal, resulting in a denser structure, finer grain size, and better mechanical properties, enabling them to withstand higher pressures and temperatures.

Applications

Chemical and Petrochemical Industries

Oil and Gas Industry

Food Processing and Pharmaceutical Industries

Power Generation

Water Treatment and Wastewater Facilities

Pulp and Paper Manufacturing

Marine Engineering

General Industrial Applications

Manufacturing Process: Forging vs. Casting

Forging

By heating stainless steel billets and then applying external pressure (such as hammering or stamping), plastic deformation occurs, ultimately forming the final shape.

Performance Characteristics:

High strength and toughness: Forged parts have a uniform and dense internal structure, enabling them to withstand higher pressures, impacts, and fatigue loads.

Durability: Forged components have a long service life and are particularly suitable for long-term use in harsh conditions such as high temperatures, high pressures, and high stresses.

High strength and toughness: The strength and impact resistance of forged components far exceed those of castings.

Better sealing performance: Forged components lack casting defects such as porosity and inclusions, ensuring no leaks at connection points.

Durability: The structure is more compact, resulting in a longer service life.

Casting

Stainless steel is heated to a molten state and then poured into a pre-prepared mold. After cooling and solidifying, it is demolded to form the final product.

Performance characteristics:

Lower mechanical properties: Due to potential internal defects, castings typically have lower strength, toughness, fatigue strength, and impact resistance compared to forgings.

Prone to defects: Internal defects such as porosity, shrinkage cavities, and inclusions may exist, affecting strength and sealing performance.

Poor sealing performance: Internal defects may serve as potential pathways for fluid leakage, posing greater risks under high-pressure conditions.

Conclusion:

Although the casting process is cost-effective, for critical applications in industries such as petroleum, chemicals, and nuclear power that demand the highest levels of safety and reliability, the forging process is undeniably the preferred choice. Its superior mechanical properties and sealing performance ensure the long-term stable operation of pipeline systems and minimize safety risks to the greatest extent possible.

Stainless steel pipe nipple is a commonly used fittings in the pipeline connection, more welding or threaded form of connecting pipeline, through the threads and other pipeline or equipment connection, play a role in extending the pipeline, changing the direction of the pipeline or connecting the pipeline of different diameters, and other roles. Commonly used in low and medium pressure piping system. The material is stainless steel, with good corrosion resistance, high temperature resistance and strength.

Threaded nipples are mainly divided into one end threaded nipples and both end threaded nipples. One end of the external thread and the other end of the flat or beveled short section is called a single threaded section; both ends are external threaded section is called a double threaded section.

ASTM A733 Threaded Pipe Nipple Specification

Specification

Threaded Nipple

Size

1/4” – 12” / DN8 – DN300

Wall Thickness

Sch 10 – Sch 160 / XXS

Standard

ASTM A733

End

PE, BE,THD

Thread Type

NPT, PT, BSPP, BSPT, PF

Stainless Steel

ASTM A312 TP304/304L/304H, 316/316L, 310S, 317,347,904L,

Duplex Stainless Steel

S32205, S31803, 32750, 32760, S32550

Classification of Threaded Nipples

One end threaded nipple

The single-ended threaded nipple is machined with a thread on one end only and a flat or socket on the other end, and is used for connecting pipes that require a threaded connection on one end. This construction allows it to be used for specific connection purposes in piping systems. For example, when a piece of equipment with a female connector needs to be connected to a pipeline, the unthreaded end of the single threaded nipple can be welded to the pipeline or connected in some other way, while the threaded end is threaded to the female connector of the equipment.

In the petrochemical industry, if there is a small process pipeline, there is a need for regular replacement of filter cartridges, the filter inlet and outlet for the female threaded interface. In this case, a single threaded nipple can be used to connect the filter to the pipeline. The unthreaded end of the single-threaded nipple is welded to the pipe to ensure a solid connection, while the threaded end is connected to the filter’s female connector, making it easy to disassemble and replace the filter.

Both end threaded nipple

Double-ended threaded nipple has threads on both ends, which can connect pipes or fittings that need threaded connection on both ends. This makes it more flexible in piping connections. Double-ended threaded nipples can be used directly to connect two pipes with external threads, or to connect a pipe with an external thread to a piece of equipment or pipe fitting with an internal thread.

In natural gas transmission piping systems, double-threaded nipples are used when it is necessary to connect two short pipes with external threads. One end of the double-ended threaded nipple is connected to the male thread of one pipe, and the other end is connected to the male thread of the other pipe, and the pipes are connected by thread tightening to ensure that the natural gas is transported in a sealed manner.

Precautions for Packaging

Threaded pipe nipple should be especially protected from contact with sharp objects to prevent scratches or bruises when packaging. Therefore we use plastic pipe caps to protect the threaded ports.

Plastic film is one of the commonly used materials in the packaging of threaded short sections. It has good flexibility and moisture resistance. For some small threaded nipples, especially those used in relatively clean and dry environments, plastic film can provide basic protection.

We use high-strength, compression- and tear-resistant cardboard boxes to ensure that they can withstand the weight of threaded knuckles and the impact of transportation.

Stainless steel threaded pipe fittings are stainless steel pipe connectors that use threaded connection. They use the internal and/or external threads of the pipe fittings to screw together with pipes or equipment with corresponding threads to achieve functions such as pipe extension, diversion, branching, diameter reduction or closure. In pipeline engineering, it is widely used in various industrial and civil fields, such as petroleum, chemical industry, building water supply and drainage, etc.

Features of Stainless Steel Threaded Pipe Fittings

Strong corrosion resistance: Stainless steel material itself has excellent corrosion resistance, able to resist the erosion of a variety of chemical media, to ensure the long-term stable operation of the piping system.

Convenient installation: Threaded connection is a non-welded connection, which is very convenient and quick to install and disassemble, and does not require professional welding equipment and skills, greatly reducing the construction difficulty and cost.

Repeatable: Threaded connection allows repeated disassembly and installation of pipe fittings, which is convenient for maintenance, remodeling or relocation of piping systems.

Wide range of application: Widely used in a variety of piping material requirements and pressure level is not too high fluid transportation system.

Sealing: Reliable sealing can be realized through the screwing of threads and sealing materials.

Tapered Pipe Thread.

NPT (National Pipe Taper): American National Tapered Pipe Threads are tapered on both the inner and outer threads, and rely on a tight fit on the threads themselves and a thread sealant to achieve a seal.

BSPT (British Standard Pipe Taper Thread) / R-Series: British Standard Pipe Taper Threads with a tapered male thread and either a tapered (Rc) or parallel (Rp) female thread, usually requiring a sealant to make a seal.

Parallel Pipe Thread.

BSPP (British Standard Pipe Parallel Thread) / G Series: British Standard Parallel Pipe Threads are straight parallel threads on both the internal and external sides. These threads do not provide a seal and rely on a washer, O-ring or other sealing device to seal either on the end of the thread or inside the thread.

Types of Threaded Pipe Fittings

Threaded Elbow

A threaded elbow is a pipe fitting used to change the direction of a pipe, with threads on one or both ends. It usually consists of an elbow body and a threaded part. The bending part of the elbow body is generally 90° or 45°.

Threaded Tee

Threaded Tee is usually used in some low-pressure small-diameter pipeline systems. It can divide the pipeline into three branches and form a 90-degree angle between the three branches.

Threaded Cross

Threaded Cross is a pipe connector with four openings, usually used to divide the pipe system into four different directions to achieve the diversion of the medium.

Threaded Coupling

The threaded coupling is a simple but important pipe connection fitting. Its main structure is a hollow cylinder with threads inside. The threads at both ends of the couplings are usually of the same specification so that it can be connected to threaded pipes of the same diameter.

Threaded Cap

A threaded cap is a pipe fitting used to close the end of a pipe. It is mainly composed of a cap body and a threaded part. The cap body is a hemispherical or flat-top structure with a hollow interior to fit the outer diameter of the pipe. The threaded part is located at the open end of the cap body and is usually machined with internal or external threads, depending on the thread type of the pipe or pipe fitting it matches.

Threaded Nipple

A nipple, as the name implies, is a short tube with threads on both ends. Depending on the type of thread, it can be categorized into various forms, such as double male nipple with male threads on both ends, or male and female nipple with male threads on one end and female threads on the other.

Threaded Bushing

A bushing, also known as a buchen or reducer, is a type of tubing used for connecting different sizes of threaded fittings. It has a female thread on one end and a male thread on the other, and is used to convert between large and small diameters by matching the internal and external threads.

Threaded Plug

Plugs are threaded pipe fittings used to close off the end of a pipe or an unused connection. They come in two main forms, caps, which are usually used to close off the outside of a pipe, and plugs, which are usually used to close off the inside threads or ports of a pipe.

Stainless Steel 304/304L Forged Fittings are critical components in various piping systems, known for their robustness, corrosion resistance, and ability to withstand high pressures and temperatures. They are manufactured using a forging process, which involves shaping heated steel by hammering or pressing, resulting in a dense and strong product with excellent mechanical properties.

Stainless steel forged fittings are pipe fittings forged from stainless steel round bars or billets, and have excellent corrosion resistance, high temperature resistance and high pressure resistance. According to different uses and connection methods, stainless steel forged pipe fittings can be divided into many types, such as elbows, tees, crosses, pipe clamps, pipe caps, etc. In today’s industrial field, stainless steel forged pipe fittings have become an important part of fluid transportation systems. As a high-quality, high-performance pipe fittings, stainless steel forged pipe fittings have been widely used in petroleum, chemical, natural gas, refrigeration and other industries.

Manufacturing Methods

Depending on the specific type and requirements of the pipe fitting, forged fittings are primarily manufactured using die forging, open-die forging (free forging), and machining processes. Conventional die forging methods often result in significant flash (excess material), leading to material waste. To reduce material consumption, some fitting manufacturers have started adopting flashless forming processes, achieving good results. This section mainly introduces the processes for manufacturing pipe fittings using die forging, open-die forging, and machining.

① Die Forging

For small-sized fittings with relatively complex shapes, such as socket-weld and threaded tees, crosses, and elbows, die forging should be used.

The raw material (billet) used for die forging should be rolled stock, such as bars, thick-walled pipes, or plates. When steel ingots are used as raw material, they should first be rolled into bars or pre-forged before being used as die forging billets to eliminate defects like segregation and looseness within the ingot.

After heating, the billet is placed into a die and forged (depending on the situation, it might undergo preliminary forging before final die forging). The pressure causes the metal to flow and fill the die cavity. If the forged blank has flash, an additional step of trimming off the excess material is required to complete the entire die forging process.

② Open-Die Forging (Free Forging)

For pipe fittings with special shapes or those unsuitable for die forging, open-die forging can be used. Open-die forging should produce the general shape of the fitting; for example, a tee should have its branch pipe section forged out.

③ Machining

For certain cylindrical-shaped fittings, such as double-socket couplings and unions, they can be directly machined from bar stock or thick-walled pipes. During machining, the metal material’s grain flow should be approximately parallel to the fitting’s axial direction. Tees, crosses, and elbow-type fittings must not be directly machined from bar stock.

Types of Stainless Steel 304/304L Forged Fittings

Forged fittings are primarily categorized by their connection method into two main types: Threaded Fittings and Socket Weld Fittings.

These two connection methods determine how the fittings are installed and connected within a piping system, which in turn dictates their respective application scenarios, pressure ratings, and specific advantages and disadvantages.

Socket Weld (SW) Fittings:

Characteristics: The fitting has an internal bore (socket) into which the pipe is inserted. The connection is then made by a fillet weld on the exterior of the fitting. This means the weld is outside the pipe, preventing it from affecting the pipe’s inner diameter.

Applications: Suitable for small-bore, high-pressure, high-temperature piping systems, especially those where a smooth internal wall is not strictly required, or where internal corrosion or scaling needs to be prevented (since the weld is external). Commonly used in the chemical, petroleum, and power industries.

Pressure Ratings: Typically available in Class 3000 LBS, 6000 LBS, 9000 LBS, etc.

Threaded (THD / Screwed) Fittings:

Characteristics: The fitting has internal or external threads (usually NPT or BSPT standards) that connect to the pipe via a threaded connection.

Applications: Suitable for small-bore, medium-to-low pressure, non-critical piping systems. They are easy to install and disassemble, requiring no welding. Commonly used in instrumentation lines, hydraulic systems, and pneumatic systems.

Pressure Ratings: Typically available in Class 2000 LBS, 3000 LBS, 6000 LBS, etc.

Stainless Steel 304 vs. 304L Grades

Both 304 and 304L are austenitic stainless steels and are part of the “18/8” family (approximately 18% Chromium, 8% Nickel). They offer excellent corrosion resistance, good formability, and weldability. The primary difference lies in their carbon content:

Stainless Steel 304 (UNS S30400):

– Contains a maximum carbon content of 0.08%.

– Offers good general corrosion resistance and strength.

– However, during welding, the higher carbon content can lead to carbide precipitation in the heat-affected zone (HAZ), making it susceptible to intergranular corrosion in aggressive environments.

Stainless Steel 304L (UNS S30403):

– “L” stands for “Low Carbon,” with a maximum carbon content of 0.03%.

– This lower carbon content significantly reduces the risk of carbide precipitation during welding, making it highly resistant to intergranular corrosion in the “as-welded” condition.

– It’s the preferred choice for applications where welding is required and where the component will be exposed to corrosive environments without post-weld annealing.

– Due to the lower carbon, 304L has slightly lower mechanical properties (tensile and yield strength) compared to 304, but its improved weldability and corrosion resistance often outweigh this.

Types of Forged Fittings

ASTM A182 forged fittings are mainly divided into two categories: socket weld and threaded fittings.

Socket Weld Fittings

Socket weld fittings are a type of pipe connection, consisting of a socket and a spigot. The socket is the part of the forged fittings that receives the spigot of another pipe fitting, and the spigot is the part of the pipe fitting that is inserted into the socket. Its outer diameter is slightly smaller than the inner diameter of the socket so that it can be inserted smoothly.

Threaded fittings are fittings with threads, which are connected to other pipe fittings, valves or equipment through threaded connection. Threaded connection is a detachable connection method, which uses the internal or external threads on the forged fittings to achieve connection and sealing through the screwing of threads.
