The function of buttweld pipe elbow is change direction in pipe systems. The direction change usually in 45 degree, 90 degree and 180 degree, and based on the special requirements of customer, the elbow also could be other degree like 30° or 60°。All degrees are available in long radius versions, and in addition the 90° elbow and 180° elbow both in the short radius version.

Long Radius Elbow vs Short Radius Elbow

The radius define the distance over which they change direction. Center to face distance is the center line of one end to the opposite face, which is equivalent to the radius. Radius always represent by letter R. Long radius elbow and short radius elbow is the most basic and common radius type of pipe elbows.

Long radius elbow is abbreviated as LR elbow, and LR always is 1.5 times of nominal pipe size (or R=1.5D). Short radius elbow it shorted as SR elbow, SR is equivalent to nominal pipe size (R=1D).

Buttweld elbows are also available in other radius according to requirement. It can be 2D, 3D, 4D,5D or larger. Those elbows that have larger radius than 1.5D we also call them pipe bend.

The most applied version is 90 degree long radius elbow and 45 degree elbow, short radius elbow is usually applied if there is too little space. Both LR and SR type 180 degree buttweld elbow have a center to center dimension double the matching 90 degree elbows.

Straight & Reducing Buttweld Pipe Elbow

Straight elbow has two outlets with the same dimensions, it is used for connecting pipes and fittings which have the same diameter and wall thickness. Equal / Straight type buttweld elbow is the basic type, its fuction is connecting pipes and changing the direction.

Reducing elbow has two end in different dimensions, the diameter or wall thickness or both can be different. Buttweld reducing elbow can change the diameter of pipe while provide direction changes.T he dimension of butt weld equal elbow and reducing elbow are in accordance with ASME B16.9, and stainless steel buttweld elbow also can be made according to ASME B36.19. The ends have two versions: palin end and beveled end. Prepared ends are easy for butt welding.
